Lagrange - Saint-Julien 2022

Château Lagrange, the quest for excellence

Four centuries of Medoc history along with the uncompromising quality goals shared with the Japanese owners - Suntury Group - since 1983 have inspired Château Lagrange, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

Located on two Günzian gravel mounds, the Lagrange vineyard stretches across 118 hectares in a single plot within the Saint-Julien appellation. Château Lagrange has managed to combine tradition and embrace innovation to express, with the utmost precision, its unchanged terroir since 1855 and produce a powerful, elegant, and harmonious wine each year.

2022 - the impressive resilience of the vines!

Matthieu Bordes tells you about the vintage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE3RJokHGAo&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=57

The vines’ impressive resilience on the property’s gravelly terroirs was not even pushed to its limit by the unique weather conditions of 2022! Once again, we have proof that the vine plants possess the necessary resources to face challenging, sometimes extreme, weather conditions. The cool, refreshing nights had a buffer effect on the extraordinarily high daytime temperatures in this the hottest ever vintage on record in Bordeaux. The grapes were quite unique, small, concentrated and ripe with a disconcerting acidity. We harvested little but great ! We are privileged to be able to write some of the most remarkable pages of the Domaine’s history: the fact is that Bordeaux has probably produced the greatest vintage of the last fifty years.

Château Lagrange 2022 exudes an incredible freshness; if subjected to a blind tasting, it would be difficult to fathom that it originates from a hot vintage. The fragrant bouquet is demure and composed, as elegant contours spring forth from the glass. Sour plum, cherry, and jujube frolic on the palate, accompanied by the delicate scent of wisteria and iris, conjuring the image of a celestial being wandering in a garden. Château Lagrange’s velvety allure unfurls at the mid-palate, imparting a tender, silky tannin texture to every nuance. Pure, subtle, and imbued with depth, this Saint-Julien reveals a greater complexity with each taste. (pH 3.53, IPT 76, Grand Vin 40%)

The 2022 Lagrange has turned out nicely in bottle, offering up classic aromas of crème de cassis, plums and pencil shavings, framed by a deft touch of oak vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, dense and velvety, with lively acids and chalky tannins, it's an especially muscular, rich Lagrange that will reward a bit of patience.

Continuing a run of exceptional vintages where everything seems to be going right at this property. High Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and it comes across in the sleek black fruits and peony character, very much floral and finessed. Good stuff, this is impressive, enjoyable, very St Julien and very good. 50% new oak for ageing, Eric Boissenot consultant, Mathieu Bordes director since 2013.

Cassis, ripe black cherries, freshly sharpened pencils, leather, and violet notes all shine in the 2022 Château Lagrange, a remarkably pure, concentrated, powerful Saint-Julien with fine tannins and a seamless, balanced mouthfeel. It has the fruit to shine even today. As with many of these top Médocs, I wouldn't be surprised to see this close down with 2-3 years of bottle age. It's going to be long-lived. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot that spent 21 months in 60% new French oak.

2027-2037 90/100

The 2022 Lagrange (Saint-Julien) has a serious Saint-Julien bouquet: quite dense compared to previous vintages, with potent black fruit, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco that all dovetails into more estuarine-influenced aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe entry, quite bold in flavor yet there is also control and focus. This is a more muscular Lagrange, grippy with a tarry finish. To repeat, the 2022 is a "serious" Lagrange in a positive use of that word, one that will demand bottle age, ranking alongside the 2016 as the best Grand Vin from this estate.

A polished and expressive St.-Julien that shows spot-on balance. Fresh blueberries, wet stones, currants and a touch of red berries. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins that are firm but dissolved. Quite precise, juicy and focused. Beautiful balance and length. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Lagrange is a gorgeous, classy wine. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon and lavender meld into a core of bright red-toned fruit. Lagrange handled the rigors of the growing season well. I especially admire its precision and nuance. Lively floral and citrus notes lift the finish beautifully. Tasted twice.

Juicy and intensely ripe in terms of texture - tannins are fleshy but also really cool giving this a push-pull of bright acidity and actually quite serious mineral elements of flint and liquorice. Such an appealing weight in the mouth, layered and structured with expressive fruit and lively juiciness all combining to a stylish and inviting whole. So much going on but managed with finesse and elegance. A clear success in 2022. Harvest 8-30 September. Ageing 21 months in French oak, 60% new. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Lagrange was picked between 8 and 30 September, it ages in 60% new oak for a planned 21 months. It has an almost clinical bouquet, with very well defined blackberry and blueberry fruit, graphite and crushed stone. Quite a gap in quality between this and the Fiefs de Lagrange this year. The palate is extremely pure with cashmere tannins, black cherry fruit infused by blood orange, lightly spiced, hints of white pepper toward a very concentrated, fine-boned finish. This will require several years in bottle, but it will be worth waiting for. A serious and very able Lagrange that should not be under-estimated.

Deep crimson. Youthful and exuberant wine with plentiful elderberry, dark cherry, hint marzipan aromas and flavours, supple ripe chocolaty tannins and well integrated saline/ mineral notes. Very expressive wine. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 50-60% new oak)

Plum colour with vivid raspberry highlights, gentle oak smoking, run towards an intense wall of tannins and smoked caramel notes, balanced by supple black fruits. Gourmet, intense, with appellation and vintage signature.

The 2022 Lagrange is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts forth with bombastic notions of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves, and redcurrant jelly, leading to alluring nuances of cinnamon stick, clove oil, star anise, and violets. The medium-bodied palate is densely laden with black fruit and baking spices layers, supported by ripe, fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and opulent. 40% of the year's production went into the first wine and yields were 34 hl/ha. pH 3.53.

The 2022 Château Lagrange is more mid-weight than I expected, yet it's nicely balanced and certainly elegant. Based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot pulled from just 40% of the total production, it has a pretty nose of cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as some floral and spicy nuances. Its oak is nicely integrated, it's medium to full-bodied, and it has fine tannins. The barrel review will seem low if this puts on weight over the course of its élevage.

The 2022 Lagrange is a bold, racy wine. Dried herbs, tobacco, cedar, mint and incense give the 2022 striking aromatic nuance and vibrancy to match its mid-weight personality. The Cabernet is especially evident in this savory and punchy Saint-Julien that is showing very well today. Drinking window : 2027-2042

Deep in color, the nose reminds you of walking into a flower shop carrying a basket of fresh-picked berries. The wine is silky, fresh, polished, elegant, and deep, with length, soft tannins, and waves of fruit and freshness in the finish. Starting with the 2016 vintage, Lagrange has been on a hot streak and with 2022, the streak continues! The wine is produced from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2055.

The 2022 Lagrange is brilliant, ranking alongside the 2020, 2019 and 2016 as one of this over-performing estate's finest recent vintages. Revealing aromas of dark cherries, cassis, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep core of fruit, beautifully refined but youthfully assertive tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. It's a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot with a very healthy pH of 3.63. 94 - 96+
