Lagrange - Saint-Julien 2021

Château Lagrange, the quest for excellence

Perched on two beautiful Gunzian gravel ridges, Lagrange’s 118-hectare vineyard spreads over an impressive single block in the Saint-Julien appellation. For decades now the uncompromising quest for excellence has been a true philosophy here, thanks to an exceptional terroir and the team’s innovative and precise approach. Year after year, the traditional painstaking vine-care and plot-by-plot vinification give birth to an elegant, powerful wine with wonderful ageing potential.

2021 vintage, a window open onto the past

This 2021 vintage will have reminded the younger generations that Bordeaux has a temperate oceanic climate where nothing can be taken for granted: indeed it is part of the magic of our unique Terroir. This year, we followed in the footsteps of the people who were at the very origin of those great wines that have made the reputation of Bordeaux. All this with the difference that experience, new knowledge, techniques and yield management are now better mastered and an essential advantage in the quest for quality. This evolution is directly perceptible in our wines today.

2021 will be remembered as the year of humility, of perseverance and of hope. It was a challenging and enriching journey : Never give up, even near the finish line when all is still left to play for !

The balance and harmony of the 2021 vintage reminds us somewhat of the wines produced in the 2000s, with a higher quality in the tannic framework and the aromatic precision.
Like a window open onto the past, the 2021 will be our neo-retro vintage par excellence !

Tasting note

Dark red colour with a crimson tint. Aromatic notes of red fruit, such as strawberry or raspberry. The attack is supple and fleshy.
With 84% of Cabernet-Sauvignon in the blend (a new estate record!), the tannic structure is powerful yet elegant. The harmony that reigns throughout promises a large drinking window.

Winemaker Matthieu Bordes was the only one to mention that he had to conduct some reverse osmosis (mainly on the Merlot) for the 2021 Lagrange. The wine was bottled last July. It has a classically styled nose, certainly not as complex as in more benevolen

The 2021 Lagrange turned out beautifully. Succulent red cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco, spice and mocha infuse the 2021 with gorgeous depth. Soft, succulent and inviting, Lagrange is wonderfully appealing. It will drink well with minimal cellaring.

The 2021 Lagrange is a strong effort, offering up notes of dark berries, pencil shavings, licorice and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated palate with lively acids and youthfully structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish, reflecting the record-high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. This is one 2021 that will reward a bit of patience.

I always tend to find Lagrange too oaky, and this vintage is no exception, but the level of woodwork does not spoil the perfume, which is as pure and bright as I can remember from this Château. However, the oak accentuates the tannins on the finish, but, overall, this is a confident and finely tuned Lagrange. 17.5

A firm and silky wine with finesse and beauty. Medium body. Medium, round tannins. Juicy finish. Subtle.

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Lagrange is clearly a step up, offering a deeper, richer style that stays firmly planted in the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage. Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, representing a selection of just 39% of the total production, it has terrific mid-palate density as well as classic notes of cassis, darker plums, chocolate, and integrated oak. It's beautifully done and should easily be an outstanding wine that will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar.

Nez très pur et détaillé toujours dans les normes classiques de l’appellation, sur le cèdre et les épices, se rapprochant en style des Léoville plus que des saint-julien du Sud. Belle tension presque minérale en bouche, parfaite expression de son lieu.

Deep crimson. Wax polish toasty vanilla, blackcurrant elderberry aromas. Slightly oak dominant palate with toasty, mocha vanilla oak over blackcurrant, blackberry fruits and underlying fine cedary textures. Finishes firm with ample dark berry fruits and juicy acidity. Elemental but very well made wine. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 2% petit verdot. 21 months in 50% new French oak. 13% alc

Lagrange 2021 continues to show the soft, mellow structure, with a very milky attack on the palate. The 100% Merlot surprisingly embodies a relatively concentrated body and some ripe aromas that far exceed the average level of 2021. On top of that is the silky chocolate milk texture at the finish. All combined in bringing a wine exuding an elegant aura from the inside out. Lagrange???2021????????????,????????????????100%?????????????,???2021?????????,????????????????,???????????

Blackberries, cedar, tobacco, spice and savory herbs on the nose bring you to a soft-textured, supple, round, forward, classical wine with a creamy-textured, dusty, peppery, crunchy, red currant-packed finish. The wine is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot. It is interesting to note that this is the highest percentage of Cabernet used in the blend in the history of the estate. 13% ABV. Yields were low at only 30 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2025-2045. 91-93

The 2021 Lagrange was picked from 12 September to 12 October at just 30hL/ha and matured in 60% new oak. The Grand Vin represents 39% of the crop. It offers light red berry fruit on the nose, with a touch of mint developing over time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, well-balanced, not a powerful Saint-Julien but it conveys a sense of finesse. Drink this over the next 12-15 years.

Representing only 39% of the estate's production, the 2021 Lagrange is very promising indeed, mingling aromas of wild berries and blackcurrants with notions of loamy soils, pencil shavings and violets. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and lively acids, it saw a cool vinification and contains a record 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, much of which was picked late, between the seventh and 12th of October. It's a brilliant effort from Matthieu Bordes and his team. Tasted five times, twice at the estate.
