Tasted at the château for a 30-year vertical tasting. The 2004 Lagrange is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot picked between 4 and 19 October. This has a lovely, engaging bouquet that is fresh and delineated, offering scents of red berry fruit, dried rose petals, sandalwood and cloves. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is not a concentrated Lagrange, not by a long chalk, but it is extremely well balanced with precision and class, the persistency longer than previous vintages, leaving a spicy residue in the mouth. Excellent. Drink now-2028. Tasted March 2014.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2004 horizontal tasting. The Château Lagrange 2004 has a mature, leathery bouquet with cooked meat, ox blood, sandalwood and smoke developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with meaty red fruit on the entry. The acidity is nicely judged with good structure towards the finish. Whilst it is a little conservative the finish is quite pretty. Tasted March 2014.

This backward, tannic, strikingly oaky St.-Julien reveals a big structure as well as copious power and muscle, and a modern-styled combination of ripe fruit and new oak. While it requires a few years of bottle age to shed its cloak of tannin, and develop more Bordelais character, it possesses plenty of stuffing, and may turn out to be outstanding with additional time in bottle. Patience is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.

Deep ruby-red. Plum, leather, mocha, coffee and smoke on the nose. Ripe on entry, then moderately sweet in the middle, with a lightly herbal quality and some unabsorbed acidity currently giving the wine a slightly disjointed character. With its flavors of currant, tobacco and smoke, this comes across as fatter than some past vintages but today the tannins are apparent, and the finish shows a dry edge. I find the young 2006 riper, denser and more harmonious.

Aromas of blackberry and cherry follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and refined. Best after 2009. 25,000 cases made. –

A dense ruby/purple color and a heady, vibrant, crunchy (what the French would call croquant) fruitiness (raspberries and cherries) along with spicy oak and herb notes emerge from this medium-bodied, moderately tannic 2004. Drink it over the next 12-14 years.
