Lacoste Borie - Pauillac 2023

Lacoste Borie: the second wine of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating. It is a family saga that goes back to the 16th century. Since 1978 the Borie family is at the head of the estate. François-Xavier Borie, the present owner, is behind this superb renaissance of this Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. He launched the complete renovation of the facilities, that benefited also to the revealing the full potential of the second wine of the estate, Lacoste Borie.

Each year during the en primeur campaign, there is the opportunity to package the wines in the famous 'Caisse Variation'. Developed exclusively for the estate and its wines, this case holds the equivalent of 12 bottles (9 liters) and includes: 1 Double Magnum, 2 Magnums, and 4 Bottles, all elegantly arranged in a wooden case. Whether it's for Grand-Puy-Lacoste or the more budget-friendly Lacoste-Borie, this case format is ideal for gifting on occasions such as births, weddings, anniversaries, or other special events.

The 2023 Lacoste-Borie has a little more clarity than I noticed from barrel, well-defined with blackberry and bilberry fruit, an underlying marine influence surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannins on the entry. Quite strict, focused but perhaps just missing a little nuance on the finish, though that manifests with later tastings.

Spiced berries, cassis and citrus on the nose. Medium-bodied, with bright fruit and fine-grained tannins. Slightly gritty yet nuanced in the open-textured finish. A blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot and 11% cabernet franc. Drink from 2026.

First made in 1982, the 2023 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Lacoste-Borie is the second wine of Château Grand-Puy Lacoste and is based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc, harvested from September 11 to the 28th. It boasts a healthy purple hue as well as juicy notes of ripe black cherries, currants, violets, spring flowers, and a kiss of graphite. Medium-bodied, upfront, and charming, it has the bright acidity of the vintage, a pure, juicy style, and a good finish.

Lacoste Borie (Pauillac; 56% Cabernet Sauvignon; 33% Merlot; 11% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 48 hl/ha; 13.2% alcohol; tasted with Emeline Borie at Grand-Puy Lacoste). Bright, crisp and fresh, this provides a pleasingly representative and authentic introduction to the grand vin. Lots of cassis and blackberry fruits, a little wild herbal note too. Some redcurrant too, with additional acidity than implies. Cool, hyper-fresh but with enough substance that this always stays sapid and juicy and never either becomes or threatens to become astringent. Very well-balanced.

Vibrant red fruits, cedar, tobacco, and herbs open the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, crisp, bright, and forward, with a charming, spicy red currant finish. The wine blends 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2026-2036.

Medium intensity ruby red, good grip and slightly old schol tannins, but this has real charm and juice, savoury and easy to drink, good Pauillac typicity. 42% new oak (reduced down from 50% over last few years).

The 2023 Lacoste-Borie is a soft, supple second wine to drink on release, while its fruity, open-knit personality is on display. Succulent red cherry, spice and rose petal are nicely pushed forward. Lovely aromatics from the Franc linger.

The 2023 Lacoste-Borie was picked September 11 to 28 at 48hL/ha. It bursts with red fruit on the nose—raspberry and wild strawberry—forward and quite generous in keeping with the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins on the entry. Moderately deep, it tapers slightly toward the graphite-infused finish. This Deuxième Vin has an easy-drinking sensibility and should be broached over the next decade.

Charming and succulent, the 2023 Lacoste-Borie bursts with pretty aromas of dark berries, petals and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's fleshy and fragrant, exhibiting excellent purity of fruit. This delicious blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc will offer a broad drinking window.
