Labégorce - Margaux 2022

Château Labégorce, a wine of passion

Château Labégorce is a place of heart where great wines have been produced for centuries. It is a place where one appreciates others' tastes—a wine that brings people together. For the Perrodo family, it has been a home for creating memories, laughter, bike rides, and polo matches for the past 30 years.

The encounter between the historical terroir of Margaux, whose origins date back to 1332, and the visionary patriarch, Hubert Perrodo, has elevated the vineyard to a high level of quality and, above all, restored Labégorce's lost harmony. Two hundred years after the property was divided into three parts (Labégorce Margaux, Labégorce Zédé, and L'abbé Gorsse de Gorsse), he succeeded in the audacious feat of bringing them back together.

Today his daughter, Nathalie Perrodo Samani, bears the responsibility for this estate, often likened to a classified growth due to the quality of its wines and its illustrious neighbors (Châteaux Margaux, Lascombes, Malescot, Marquis d'Alesme).

In 2022, Nature bestowed upon us a prodigious vintage full of depth, energy, light, and vitality!

Despite the high proportion of sandy soil in Château Labégorce, the 2022 vintage still showcases a smooth body and clear acidity, thanks to meticulous vineyard management. The roasted aromas that were prominent during En Primeur have now fully revealed their true nature after bottling. Raspberry, blueberry, and orange peel weave together seamlessly, offering a refined and delicate bouquet. With 40% new oak barrels, the mature tannins from the grapes create a perfect combination, effortlessly providing a rich and lingering finish.

Powerful, intense, bitter aniseed, cardamon and crushed almonds on the finish, cocoa-mint, shows the intensity and black pepper kick of the vintage, balanced by waves of orange peel and fennel. Ripe but the fruit stays on the right side of savoury, and the tannins are intense without being drying. 40% new oak for ageing. Nathalie Perrodo, Marjolaine de Coninck CEO and technical director.

Tasted on multiple occasions, the inky-hued 2022 Château Labégorce (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) reveals a perfumed, intense nose of ripe black cherries, cassis, spicy oak, and violets. This carries to an exotic, full-bodied Margaux that brings beautiful purity, a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's a big, powerful wine that I wouldn't be surprised to see close down over the coming 3-4 years. It will evolve for at least two decades.

The 2022 Labégorce has quite an intense nose, armed with pure black cherry, boysenberry, cedar and pencil box aromas. It's perhaps less floral than its peers, with a nod toward Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied and silky smooth, with saturated tannins and a keen line of acidity. Composed and sensual on the finish, this is a classy Margaux in the vein of Château Palmer. This is very impressive.

The blackcurrant and blackberry aromas are very attractive here. It’s medium-bodied with firm and silky tannins and a pretty finish. Not the most complex wine, but focused and complete. Drink after 2028.

The 2022 Labégorce is a potent, imposing wine. Dark red fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather and cedar are all dialed up. The oak imprint is quite strong, but otherwise, this is nicely done. I do wonder whether or not more finesse is possible.

Cloves, cocoa bean and coffee, intense tannins and grilled oak with plenty of character, and the winemaking team has done a good job over ageing to emphasise a signature Left Bank character that is missing in so many wines this year. Cool vintage slim and graceful blue and black fruits, mouthwatering with liqourice root and slate. Harvest September 23 to October 19. Limestone subsoil, with clay and gravel, 3.75ph. An upscore.

Fairly tannic but super cool and fresh too with cola and blueberry nuanced. Chewy but really juicy, an approachable fun and easy wine still with bite, tang, juiciness and tannic density. Very appealing still with bite. Not as dense and weight as some, but wow there's a lot to like; gorgeous acidity, textured and well defined tannins, lovely punchy fruit and a long length. Delicious, still with a minty, graphite and clove lift on the finish. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.6pH. Ageing in 40% new oak. Harvest 12 September 12 - 5 October. Tasted twice and loved it both times.

Château Labégorce has a high proportion of sandy soil, but thanks to meticulous field management, the 2022 vintage still shows a smooth body and clear acidity. Though the initial impressions of En Primeur wine suggest a slight emphasis on baking spice, attempting to mask the delicate fruit aromas. However, upon swirling the glass, it cannot help but reveal its pure essence of raspberry, blueberry, and a subtle hint of orange peel. The 40% new oak barrel aging, combined with the natural tannins of the grapes, creates a long-lasting finish that lingers on the palate. This is an outstanding Margaux wine that can be enjoyed in its youth.

The 2022 Labégorce, which sees the introduction of Cabernet Franc, was picked 12 September to 5 October and aged in 40% new oak. This needs a little time to find its voice on the nose, touches of black pepper infusing the red and blueberry fruit. There is a hint of terracotta. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, tensile, expressive with a lightly spiced, gentle grip. Just a bit of dryness appears on the finish but that will round out during élevage. This will be an utterly charming Margaux.

Deep crimson. Dark cherry, elderberry, brambly aromas with hints of wax polish. Fresh and pippy with abundant primary dark berry fruits, pronounced firm, bitter tannins and underlying roasted chestnut/ mocha notes. Finishes slinky and long. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 40-50% new oak). 93-94+

I continue to love the wines from Labégorce. Their 2022 checks in as 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Classic notes of darker currants, blackberries, smoked tobacco, and fresh earth all flow to a medium to full-bodied, pure, layered Margaux offering quality tannins as well as terrific purity of fruit. Pulled from 85% of the total production and aging in 40% new French oak, it's going to offer pleasure right out of the gate yet still have two decades of longevity.

The 2022 Labégorce shows terrific energy and focus. Dark cherry, espresso, menthol, licorice and incense are beautifully delineated in a vibrant, pulsating Margaux loaded with complexity. All this needs is élevage to soften. Drinking window : 2027-2042
