Labégorce - Margaux 2020

Along the famous Route des Châteaux this elegant neoclassical castle covers an area of 250 hectares, nearly 70 of which are in vines. Since its takeover in 1989, the Perrodo family has been able to give back to this property all its architectural brilliance and vitivinicultural dynamism which gives birth to Labégorce a charming wine with a very beautiful structure, with bright fruit and great finesse.

The 2020 Labégorce has turned out nicely, bursting with aromas of cherries, berries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and ample palate. Fleshy and layered, this contemporary-styled Margaux will drink well young.

A dark, brooding style, with warmed plum and black currant preserves laced with smoldering tobacco and black tea. Reveals a humus accent that runs along the edges of the finish, leaving a rustic edge. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2035.

A forward, textured, already delicious wine, the 2020 Château Labégorce offers lots of red and black fruit as well as notes of cedar, smoke tobacco, and chocolate. Based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 40% new barrels, it has perfectly integrated oak, ripe, fine-grained tannins, and outstanding overall balance. Give bottles just a year or three and enjoy over the following 10-15 years or more.

Lush, creamy, silky and already expressive, the wine is full-bodied, soft and creamy with layer after layer of black cherries, plums, currants, licorice, chocolate and a background note of espresso. Labegorce has been on fire since 2015 and I would not be surprised as the wines mature to find this to be the best vintage produced yet! Drink from 2025-2047.

The 2020 Labégorce is a dark, sumptuous beauty. The 2020 has softened a bit with élevage, but it remains a distinctly potent, brooding Margaux.

The 2020 Labegorce, matured in 40% new oak, has a fragrant, floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the lively red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. There is something "airy" about the aromatics here. The palate is slightly honeyed in texture, saturated tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit commingling with white pepper and iodine. Great persistence and salinity on the finish - an excellent, quite substantial Margaux for long-term ageing.

The 2020 Labégorce, tasted at the château, showed a little more sensuality and cohesion on the palate compared to the sample sent to the UK. Here, I adore the cashmere texture, very pure with black cherry and blueberry fruit, fresh and saline towards the finish that fans out confidently. This is quintessential Margaux, a really disarmingly gorgeous Labégorce that should give 20-25 years' pleasure.

The 2020 Labégorce is a dark, brooding Margaux. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, spice and bittersweet chocolate play off the wine's considerable density and pure power. Labégorce is not exactly subtle, but it sure packs plenty of punch. This is an especially plush style, and it works well.

I continue to love the wines from this estate in Margaux, and the 2020 Château Labegorce is no exception. Rock star crème de cassis, graphite, roasted herbs, iron, and loamy earth nuances all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a relatively soft, plush, forward style, good mid-palate density, and wonderful purity of fruit. It’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and drink nicely for 15-20 years. It should be a terrific value as well

The 2020 Labégorce was picked 16 September to 1 October and raised in 40% new oak, the remainder one year old. It has a perfumed bouquet with brambly red fruit, wild strawberry mixed with raspberry preserve and rose petal, hints of orange rind emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, classic in style with a fine bead of acidity that imparts plenty of freshness. More black fruit on the palate compared to the nose with a saline finish, this is a fine Margaux that has a suppleness suggesting it will drink early after bottling.

Smoked cedar oak on the nose, a welcome touch in a vintage where tannins have frequently been turned up to 11. Grilled almonds; really a campfire edge. I like this, works well with the vintage. The fruit softens through the mid palate but the team has done a great job of finding extra layers flavour and complexity. Good stuff. 40% new oak. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Yields around 32hl/ha. Just 20mm of rain in August here, which meant veraison was more difficult. Tasted this also at the estate, and both times I was impressed. Less opulent than 2019, more classic and serious but this is great. Harvest September 16 to October 1.

Deeply colored, the wine pops with cigar box, truffle, cedar, currants, licorice and spice on the nose. Full-bodied, rich, lush, intense, long and energetic, the round, attention seeking finish lingers with its layers of ripe, fresh, showy, blackberries and chocolate notes. Today, it is hard to find a better wine for the money in the ever-increasingly expensive Margaux appellation. Give it 5-7 years in the cellar and enjoy it over the following two decades. 93-95

The 2020 Labégorce is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aging in French oak barrels, 40% new. The alcohol is 14%. Medium to deep purple-black in color, it slides out of the glass with open-knit scents of redcurrant jelly, kirsch and black raspberries, plus hints of bay leaves and lavender. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegant with plenty of vivacious red berry flavors and a soft texture, finishing with an herbal lift.

A tight, compact Labégorce with blackcurrant, walnut and some graphite. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a solid core of tannins and fruit. Some lead pencil. Very structured for this estate.

Boisé grillé, des notes de fruits noirs et d'épices. Bouche tannique totalement dédiée au bois. Dommage.
