Kracher, TBA Grande Cuvée - Burgenland 2020

Kracher, world-class sweet wines

In 2007, Gerhard Kracher took over Weinlaubenhof KRACHER. In 2008 he was named „Winemaker of the Year“. Weinlaubenhof KRACHER, leaded by Gerhard Kracher produces year by year sweet wines on a world class level.

The estate is located in Illmitz, near the lake Neusiedl and many different small lakes which are responsible for a unique microclimate which leads to a special autumn fog. That are ideal premises for the „Botrytis cinerea“ bunch rot, which enables producing these noble sweet wines

Our KRACHER collection is composed exclusively of Trockenbeerenauslese wines. This is more than our flagship product; it represents a whole armada of wines produced at the highest level of quality. The collection consists of a different number of TBA‘s for each vintage (depending on the development of Botrytis cinerea invineyards), and a portion are presented in specifically designed and handcrafted wooden cases. These complete collections are strictly limited to a maximum of 320 boxes. The wines of the collection are consecutively numbered; the higher the number, the more bold, richer and sweeter the wine.

Tasting notes

This beautiful cuvée of Welschriesling and Chardonnay presents itself fresh and fruity in the nose. Citrus and peach notes provide freshness, dried fruit for strength on the palate. A suitable Trockenbeerenauslese for any occasion.

What a complex nose of candied ginger, apricot conserve, dried mango, quince and vanilla. It’s balanced and complete, with very well integrated lemony acidity, spice and sweet, dried fruit. There’s a lot of structure behind the richness that gives it fantastic ageing potential. A cuvee of chardonnay and welschriesling fermented and matured in new oak casks, the chardonnay in barriques and the welschriesling in Slavonian barrels. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Trockenbeerenauslese No. 4 Grande Cuvée Nouvelle Vague is based on 70% Welschriesling (vinified in large oak casks) and 30% Chardonnay (aged in barriques) and opens with an intense and concentrated bouquet with spicy quince aromas, lemon chutney, candied lemons, ripe and lush apricots and pineapples, hints of nougat, caramel and salt. It is very deep and complex but also refined, fresh and very elegant! Round, intense and highly refined on the palate, this is a saline and elegant, seemingly weightless Grande Cuvée that develops a spectacularly long and intense finish with salts and concentrated fruits such as melons, apricots, lemons, quinces and grapefruit. The aftertaste is intense and very long but of great finesse and elegance. This is a gorgeous wine, indeed, that is stunning a day after the opening and will need about a decade or more to gain even more complexity. 10% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Lütjensee, Hamburg, in June 2023. To be released in mid-September 2023.

The 2020 Trockenbeerenauslese Grande Cuvee No 4, 60% Welschriesling and 40% Chardonnay, is pale lemon-straw in color. Notes of acacia honey, beeswax, candied ginger, and lemon tart jump from the glass with hints of orange peel and spice cake. The palate is rich and unctuous, with a crisp backbone to lift the opulent sweetness to a long, energetic finish.

The second release on the Place de Bordeaux, and a stunning wine from Gerhard Kracher in 2020. Beautifully honeyed caramel, lemon, peach and apricot notes on the nose, candied, dried and fresh with salted caramel and biscuit aromas too. Freshness straight away, a scintillating acidity that lifts the expression instantly and gives energy, life and focus. This is sweet no doubt, and you feel the richness in the weight and texture, but it also has this amazing salty, minerality underneath not only giving nuance and complexity but offsetting the sugary, ginger, cinnamon, pineapple and pear mid palate. A wonderfully compelling wine, with so much crystalline purity and ease about it. Defined, focussed, interesting and perfectly balanced. I absolutely adore it! 210g residual sugar. 7.6g/l acidity. Chardonnay fermented in barriques and Welschriesling in large wooden barrels for 30 months. Like last year, a special wooden collection box will also be available featuring this wine and other cuvées of different grape varieties and sweetness levels (this one being number four).

Pale rust orange in colour, vibrant aromatics greet you on the first nose. Has a clear sweetness, a centre of caramel but wrapped in tight lemon drop and juicy pear, with a sting of steel. Lifts up through the palate and delivers excellent balance. Bottled under screwcap, which makes sense with a wine that you can keep open for a long time, returning to for a single glass as you want - I wish more sweet wines took the same route. Winemaker Gerhard Kracher. Second year on the Place de Bordeaux.
