Joanin Bécot - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2022

Joanin Bécot: A delightful wine bearing the Bécot signature.

Owners of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Gérard Bécot and his daughter Juliette decided in 2001 to seek a new challenge. In search of a property located in the appellations around Saint-Emilion and offering great potential due to the quality of its wines and its terroirs, the family found Château Joanin in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. Immediately seduced by this vineyard, they bought it and added their name. It became Château Joanin Bécot.

Today at the helm of the estate, Juliette Bécot is guided by the desire to preserve, vintage after vintage, all the flavors and the charm of the fruit, while relying on the notion of terroirs, really seductive, of this appellation which is sometimes misunderstood although very promising.

One of my favorites this year and surely a wine that punches above its weight, the 2022 Joanin Bécot reveals a perfumed, vibrant bouquet of iris, lilac, dark berries, licorice and violet. Medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, it's lively and juicy with a fresh core of fruit, bright acids and fleshy texture, concluding with a fresh, ethereal and mouthwatering finish. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is a real success and worth hunting down.

I loved the 2022 Château Joanin Bécot, a juicy, lively, nicely balanced Castillon that has perfumed red fruits as well as the classic mineral and floral nuances of the region. It's medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, and a great finish. The blend is 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the cooler, limestone Castillon region east of Saint-Emilion, and this beauty will drink well for 10-15 years if well stored. Readers could do much worse than a case of this in the cellar.

2025-2040 93/100

The 2022 Joanin-Bécot is a bold, heady wine that has really closed down post-bottling. There's a bit of density and power, but not the raciness that I saw in barrel. Some of that may be attributable to the late bottling. But we will see.

Full and fruity nose, expressive and ripe, nicely perfumed and expressive. Clean and clear, extremely mineral, graphite, pencil lead and flint stone notes on the palate alongside clear blue fruits, blueberries, blackcurrants and some red summer berries. Super smooth in terms of texture but also quite lean in terms of fruit flavour, this has bite and tang, a touch austere but also really quite juicy and floral too. Needs a bit of time, but feels precise and focussed with grip and intensity. I like the fruitiness, really quite upfront but keeping the liveness and energy. Succulent and nicely sweet touches with juicy acidity. Easy enjoyment, plush, mineral, all in balance. 3.6pH. 12% press wine. A yield of 39hl/ha.

Before tasting Château Joanin Bécot, I was filled with anticipation. The old vines, higher proportion of clay-limestone soil, and garden-style management are all weapons to combat hot vintages. After tasting, I confirmed: it was just as I expected. The floral and fruity aromas are clear and rich, the limestone character is more prominent, a distinct salinity accompanied the wine, followed by classic powdery tannins on the finish. The delicate extraction and low-temperature maceration give this wine an extremely smooth aromatic line, making it a true masterpiece that can stand up to Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé members.

Brambled berry fruit, hawthorn and pummice stone, this has an enjoyable texture on the attack, then gives way to sweet damson puree and creme de cassis fruit. Luscious, almost ready to drink, closes in on the finish as the acidity drops. 35hl/h yield, 50% new oak. Harvest 15 to 25 September. Juliette Bécot owner.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Joanin Becot has a deep purple-black color. It races out of the glass with vibrant notes of kirsch, black raspberries, and juicy black plums, leading to nuances of cinnamon stick, star anise, and dusty soil. Full-bodied, the palate is plush and soft-spoken, with lots of elegant, spicy accents and a fragrant finish.

I loved the 2022 Château Joanin Bécot, which might be the finest vintage I've tasted from this château. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, harvested between the 15th and 26th of September and aged in 50% new barrels, it has a vivid purple hue as well as awesome aromatics of black raspberries, chalky minerality, and flowers. As with many of these top Castillon releases, it tastes like a top Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé and is medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and terrific balance.

The 2022 Joanin-Bécot is one of the best vintages I can remember tasting. Heady and explosive in the glass, the 2022 offers up copious red/purplish berry fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol and licorice all saturate the finish. This could be a Sleeper. Drinking window : 2025-2034

Violets, plums, cherries and licorice fill the nose. From there, the medium-bodied wine is opulent, fruity, deep and dark, with elements of chocolate, black plums, black cherries, spice and licorice on the mid-palate that carry through to the finish. The wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. 15% ABV, 3.60 pH. Some of the vines used here date back 1870! Drink from 2025-2035.

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from Juliette Bécot, the 2022 Joanin Bécot offers up aromas of dark berries, bay leaf, vine smoke and lilac. Medium to full-bodied, supple and incisive, it's a rich but vibrant wine that exhibits the potential of the Côtes de Castillon in vintages like this.
