Joanin Bécot - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2017

Joanin Bécot, a pleasure wine made by the Bécot family

Owners of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Gérard Bécot and his daughter Juliette decided in 2001 to seek a new challenge. In search of a property located in the appellations around Saint-Emilion and offering great potential due to the quality of its wines and its terroirs, the family found Château Joanin in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. Immediately seduced by this vineyard, they bought it and added their name. It became Château Joanin Bécot.

Today at the helm of the estate, Juliette Bécot is guided by the desire to preserve, vintage after vintage, all the flavors and the charm of the fruit, while relying on the notion of terroirs, really seductive, of this appellation which is sometimes misunderstood although very promising.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Joanin Becot is a little broody with notions of tar and chargrill to start, giving way to a core of baked plums and mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate has invigorating herbal sparks with a chewy frame and restrained finish. Drinking Window : 2020 - 2030

The 2017 Joanin Bécot has quite a bit of up-front density and pure power. Raspberry jam, mocha, dried flowers and spice give the 2017 notable complexity. Just as it was from barrel, there is good intensity in the fruit but the tannins are just a bit overwhelming. If they soften, the 2017 could turn out to be even better than this note suggests.

Slightly austere, medium-bodied red with plums and hints of chocolate. Yet, there’s some very pretty fruit underneath it all. Drink now.

Nez un peu boisé, bouche fraîche, fruits noirs, assez fruité. Tendu. Serré en finale.

Brought in exclusively by American merchant Jeffrey Davies, the 2017 Château Joanin Bécot is, as almost always, a hidden gem of a wine. Black fruits, tobacco, a touch of minerality, and plenty of herbal notes give way to a medium-bodied, ripe, silky 2017 that has the sweet tannin and upfront style that defines the vintage. The 2017 is a rough blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, all aging in 50% new French oak. It’s also worth noting that the talented Thomas Duclos lends his consulting advice here.

The 2017 Joanin Bécot is a very pretty Côtes de Castillon. Juicy red cherry, dark raspberry and sweet oak notes abound in this pliant, super-inviting wine. There is just a touch of dryness on the finish. The 2017 wants to please, but the fruit doesn’t carry all the way through to the finish, which creates an impression of dryness.

Cushy, curvy and animated, this wine is already offering licorice infused, supple textured plushness with black cherry and cocoa character. The finish has some lift, leading me to believe it will be better with a year or two in the cellar -- though you can certainly drink this young for instant gratification. The wine was made from a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

The 2017 Joanin Bécot has a slightly smudged bouquet at first, a mixture of red and black fruit, much lighter than recent vintages and needing a little more energy to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, nicely judged acidity with a simple, peppery, tertiary finish. Drink for three or four years after bottling.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Joanin Becot has a very peppery nose over a core of black plums and cassis with a waft of dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and just a tad lean and chewy with appealing freshness and an uncomplicated finish. The current blend is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

A fine and easy Bordeaux already with dark-berry and cherry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a crisp finish.

A savory streak pulls soft-edged raspberry and plum fruit along, with a light anise note chiming in on the finish.—J.M.
