Inglenook - Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley 2017

Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to John Daniel Jr., who produced the muchheralded Inglenook 1941 Cabernet Sauvignon from vine cuttings brought to the Inglenook Estate from Bordeaux by founder Gustave Niebaum. Today, this estate-grown wine is blended with the finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties that remain after the highly selective blending of Rubicon.

Appellation: Rutherford, Napa Valley

100% Organic certified - CCOF since 1991
Barrel Regimen: 18 Months, 100% French Oak, 50% New Oak

Vintage Notes
Rainfall in winter and spring of 2017 was bountiful, totaling nearly 50 inches. These condi-tions allowed for a smooth transition into bloom and fruit set. All of the organically-farmed fruit on the Inglenook estate that comprise our 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from September 5th to October 6th. The fruit shows balanced acidity across the board, lending freshness to the final blend – a hallmark of Inglenook wines.

Winemaker’s Tasting Notes
Ruby in color, with a violet-edged hue, the 2017 shows notes of blackberry brambles, black cherry, truffle, fennel and cocoa. The structure is tightly-woven, with fine, round, velvety tannins; hints of vanilla and licorice arise during the long, generous finish. Superb balance and freshness ensure that this wine will continue to evolve in the bottle for years to come.

Aromas of currants, blackberries and violets follow through to a medium body and firm, tight tannins that give it length and structure. This needs time to soften. Better after 2022.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is rich and boisterous in feel, with good energy and terrific balance for the year. Sweet floral notes, blood orange and spice add shades of nuance to a core of dark red berry fruit. More than anything else, though, I am very pleasantly surprised by the wine's freshness and overall energy.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is incredibly primary at this stage. Deep, unctuous and flamboyant to the core, with a huge center of fruit, the 2017 is going to need a number of years in bottle to shed some of its baby fat. Although the 2017 is decidedly rich – especially by the standards that have characterized the Inglenook wines in recent years – it holds tremendous promise.

A barrel sample blended of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals scents of dried roses, kirsch and black cherries with touches of bay leaves and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied with bright red and black fruits and a chewy backbone, it finishes with a lively herbal lift. 7,440 cases are estimated to be made.
