Haut Brisson - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

The world of Vignobles K

The Vignobles K Group, a family company, was created in 2014, regrouping 7 wine properties, situated on the best terroirs on 4 prestigious appellations of Bordeaux, included Château Bellefont-Belcier (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé), Château Haut-Brisson (Saint Emilion Grand Cru), Château Tour Saint Christophe (Saint Emilion Grand Cru), Château La Patache (Pomerol), Enclos Tourmaline (Pomerol). Peter Kwok, the group's owner, is a Bordeaux wine lover and a French culture lover.

Château Haut-Brisson, the first purchase

Château Haut-Brisson was the first property acquired by Peter Kwok and his daughter Elaine in 1997. In 2019, Mr. Stéphane Schinazi, a Bordeaux native, acquired Château Haut Brisson from Vignobles K. Mr. Schinazi has a strong passion for wine and after a successful career in the field of technology, he is looking to start a new chapter of his career discovering the wine world.

Château Haut-Brisson is located south of the appellation on the 3 villages of Saint-Émilion, Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens and Vignonet. The diversity of terroirs, combined with vines of an average age of 30 years, allows us to produce wines at optimum maturity that expresses the terroir.

In addition, Vignobles K will partner with Mr. Stéphane Schinazi to jointly overlook both technical and commercial management at the estate.

Before the harvest, I visited the vineyards of Château Haut-Brisson and was worried that the well-draining soil would not help it survive the dry summer of 2022. However, when tasting the wine En Primeur, I was relieved when feeling the familiar sense of smoothness. A rich aroma of blackberries emerged after swirling the glass. Thanks to the low-temperature maceration and gentle extraction, the texture of the tannins was very soft, making it a rich Saint-Émilion wine that is perfect for early consumption.

Waves of crushed red roses on the aromatics, this is very pretty, plenty of chalky tannins also, balanced with rich deep brambled fig and blackberry fruits. Good stuff. 18ha estate, aged in 35% new oak with the rest in neutral oak, low SO2 addition, harvest September 9 to 24. No irrigation across any of the Vignoble K estates, 3.6ph. Single point upscore.

As readers may remember, the 2022 Haut-Brisson is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Evoking aromas of cassis, mulberries and flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, round and enveloping with a juicy core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline, chalky finish enhanced by a delicate reduction at this stage. This is one of the most gourmand offerings in the Vignobles K universe.

The 2022 Château Haut-Brisson is impressive, with the vintage’s sun-kissed style, while staying more medium to full-bodied, pure, and elegant. Ripe black cherries, currants, crushed stone, and pressed flower notes all shine here, and I love its overall balance and finesse. Given its seamless style, it drinks well today, yet it has ripe, polished tannins and should evolve gracefully over the coming two decades.

2027-2039 93/100

The 2022 Haut Brisson has an attractive, open-knit nose with vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied and more classical in style than its peers, with grainy tannins and a grippy, off-dry finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

A successful Haut-Brisson this year with a touch of graphite and minerals to the black cherries and peppery spices. Really juicy and fine-grained on the palate with firmness and spot-on balance. Very good length. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Haut-Brisson is a sumptuous, racy wine. Super-ripe dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and new leather all meld together in a racy, mid-weight Saint-Émilion that is all charm. Soft contours wrap it all together. There's a lot to like here.

Vivid purple colour, rich and vibrant in the glass. Aromas of dark black fruit and opulent perfumed scents. Juicy and supple, tannins are prominent but so is acidity giving a push pull of tension and fruit forwardness. You can taste the sun kissed fruit in the glass, very slightly jammy, but it keeps a sense of liveliness and freshness too giving a drinkable expression. Really quite a joyful and fun expression with bite and soft liquorice spicing. Tasted twice. Yield: 44hl/ha. 3.60pH. 35% new barrels.

The deep purple colour that is a clear vintage signature. Edges of fig and fleshy damson, bitter chocolate, intense character for this estate. ph3.6. 42hl/h crop, from vineyards in Vignonet/St Sulphice on sandy-gravel soils, began picking September 9 to 24, no irrigation across any of the Vignoble K estates, 3.6ph.

A terrific Saint-Emilion in the making, the 2022 Château Haut-Brisson excels in the vintage. Giving up lots of smoky red and black fruits, graphite, and leather on the nose, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, nicely balanced mouthfeel, quality tannins, and outstanding length.

The 2022 Haut-Brisson is a sensual, mysterious wine. Soft contours wrap around a core of black cherry, mocha, lavender, licorice and cedar. This open-knit, vibrant Saint-Émilion is surprisingly restrained for the year. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2025-2037

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Haut-Brisson reveals aromas of dark berries, spices and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent palate framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, saline finish.
