Haut Brion - Pessac-Léognan 2000

Haut-Brion, a legendary estate

The vineyards of Haut-Brion have flourished on gravelly slopes since the 1st century AD. In 1521, Haut-Brion became the first vineyard to be named after its terroir rather than its owner or parish, introducing the concept of a "Grand Vin". Recognised as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it is the only wine outside the Médoc to be so classified and the only one to be double classified as a Grand Cru de Graves, underlining its uniqueness.

In 1935, Clarence Dillon acquired Château Haut-Brion and restored it to its former glory. Today, the 4th generation of the family, represented by Prince Robert de Luxembourg, continues his extraordinary vision, bold and courageous. The estate faces La Mission Haut-Brion and shares with it a vast terrace of fine gravel known as Haut-Brion, which appears on ancient maps and charters. The vineyard covers 51 hectares, 48 of which are planted with red grape varieties and 3 with white. Today, the wines produced annually at Haut-Brion embody the full essence of this exceptional terroir.

Doesn't it seem like a different era when the 2000s were released to great fanfare? I mean, it's only 15-16 years ago, but I guess the world has changed so much in the interim, it feels longer. This was made before 9/11 changed the world into a darker place, when the Internet was still the domaine for geeks, when Tony Blair was liked and Britain was an active if bolshie member of the European Union. Bordeaux was the kingpin of fine wine, Burgundy its downmarket cousin. Following the script, along came a great vintage hand in hand with the numerical significance of a new millennium and hey, presto, we all rejoiced. Then as the years passed, it was side-lined by 2005, 2009, 2010 and perhaps even 2015. To say the 2000s are forgotten about is too strong an expression, but certainly murmurings that the wines have not lived up to the initial hype, and that they seem obdurate and unflattering with age have somewhat tarnished their reputation vis-à-vis subsequent peaks. Just when you think that adulation might have been misplaced, along comes a bottle like the 2000 Château Haut-Brion and you experience euphoria, like seeing an old friend whose company you had forgotten how much you treasure. Robert Parker gave this wine 99 points in 2010 and you know what, the only thing I might change about the score is to put a plus sign next to it. It's not a Pessac-Léognan for those born without patience, however, in 20-odd years they might look back on this as the pinnacle of the millennial year. Who made it? Why, the very same clever sausage who made the 1990 La Mission Haut-Brion. 99+

Full red-ruby. Roasted plum, currant, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Compellingly dense and thick but almost miraculously lively and light on its feet. Has a texture like liquid velvet, coating the entire palate. Wonderfully unmanipulated wine, with perfectly integrated acids giving it superb subtle vinosity and thrust. Finishes with outstanding building persistence, with the substantial tannins perfectly supported by the wine's fat middle.

It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with the perfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. However, it is not as fat, unctuous, flamboyant, or voluminous as La Mission. Yet, like a great diplomat, it is a wine of intensity, authority, and measured restraint. A supremely elegant offering, its dense ruby/purple color, and burgeoning perfume of scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, black currants, cherries, lead pencil, and subtle spicy oak are followed by a delicate yet powerfully flavorful, multi-layered, highly nuanced, and extraordinarily pure and seamless wine. There have been so many recent classics from Haut-Brion, it is premature to suggest the 2000 is better than the 1998, 1995, 1990, or 1989, but it is certainly a prodigious wine of dazzling persistence, length, and complexity. A blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, it should prove to be uncommonly long-lived, even by the standards of Haut-Brion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.

Beautiful tobacco, berry, cedar and plum aromas in this one. Full-bodied, yet very fine and reserved, with silky tannins and a medium finish. I still prefer the 1998, but this is very, very fine indeed. An Haut-Brion with lots of finesse. Best after 2010.

The 2000 Haut-Brion possesses a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a striking perfume of wet steel, hot rocks, minerals, plums, black currants, and cherries. Elegant yet deep, delicate yet authoritatively flavorful, this subtle, highly nuanced yet stunningly rich offering is a great Haut-Brion. The wine (a blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc) is a sensational Haut-Brion that should be uncommonly long-lived, even by the standards of this noble chateau. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.

The 2000 Haut-Brion, a blend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, possesses tremendous richness, and a highly-nuanced, complex personality with abundant quantities of black fruits, minerals, vanillin, and subtle earth. It is delicate yet thick, juicy and succulent. However, the 2000 seems to possess an obvious overlay of tannin as well as a degree of precision and freshness, largely attributed to slightly high acidity. A superlative effort. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035.
