Haut Bailly II - Pessac-Léognan 2023

Haut-Bailly, a promise of elegance and authenticity

Haut Bailly is one of those properties whose mere mention evokes emotions and memories of shared moments. Here, balance is found in all things—a harmony between Nature, Humanity, and the Soul of the place.
In 1998, the Wilmers family acquired this historic Cru Classé from the Sanders family. At that time, they made the enlightened decision to appoint Véronique Sanders, the third generation of the family, as its director. As the guardian of the soul of this place, her mission is to restore its former radiance while preserving its identity and style. To speak of Haut Bailly is to speak of a centuries-old history, a legendary terroir, a collective endeavor, a property in motion, and above all, a signature. The style is inherently timeless, and that of Haut Bailly has always been a promise of elegance and authenticity.

Haut-Bailly•II, a true reflection of the grand vin

It is the result of a strict selection and it shares from its elder brother the style, purity, and precision from a young age. As a model of a second wine, it also represents the symbol of the second generation of the Wilmers family, who are writing a new chapter of Haut-Bailly. Its modernized label draws upon its heritage by reintroducing the emblem that was present on Haut-Bailly labels until 1985. The red color, matching the capsule, brings energy and discreet elegance. This 'N°II' provides immediate pleasure while possessing excellent aging potential. The selected lots chosen for its blend bestow upon it a delicate and smooth structure.

The 2023 Vintage: Odyssey

‘What intense pleasure it is to savour this exquisite wine!’ exclaimed the Cyclops, after tasting the cup of wine offered by Ulysses in an attempt to break his hold. It is to be hoped that the vintage 2023 will bring similar emotions! After all, the year in the vineyard has been a veritable Odyssey: a journey fraught with pitfalls and adventures, which the team has been able to overcome thanks to its commitment and skills.

2023 was therefore characterised by a wide range of temperatures and a diversity of climatic conditions, comparable to those you might encounter on a long-haul voyage... Such is the Odyssey that this vintage offered us.

Tasting notes:

The satisfaction of overcoming adversity is followed by the joy of a wine that is both fullbodied and opulent, fresh and pure, enriched by these varied weather conditions. The Merlots, of a quality at least equal to that of 2022, have the roundness and charm of modernity. The Cabernets have the beauty and purity of classicism. From Antiquity to the present day, this is the journey that the 2023 vintage invites us to take.

The 2023 Haut-Bailly II is plump, juicy and open-knit. Crushed flowers, red cherry/plum fruit, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs and mint are some of the notes that grace this silky, super-classy wine from Haut-Bailly. Floral top notes reappear to lift the close. The essence of Haut-Bailly.

The 2023 Haut-Bailly II has a tightly wound nose at first, black plum mixed with bilberry and light potpourri scents, just a touch of caramel in the background. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Moderate depth, smooth in texture, fine acidity, nice sapidity toward the licorice-tinged finish that feels open for business. You could drink this over the next 10 to 12 years.

The second wine from this great château, the 2023 Château Haut-Bailly II is based 64% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, resting in 30% new barrels, representing 35% of the total production. Ripe black cherries, currants, tobacco, spice box, and floral notes all emerge on the nose, and it's beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, and elegant on the palate, with ripe, polished tannins.

Spicy blackberries, black cherries, tobacco and flowers are already expressive in the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is soft, forward, silky, and lively, with sweet, black cherries, and a hint of chocolate in the finish. This is perfect to enjoy while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. The wine blends 64% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. This is the second vintage incorporating the vines from Chateau Le Pape. Drink from 2027-2038. 91-93 Pts.

The 2023 Haut-Bailly II is soft, open-knit and very pretty. I am almost shocked by how accessible the II is today. Then again, I tasted it on a warm, very sunny day, ideal conditions for tasting wines from barrel. Crushed flowers, spice, mint, dried herbs and rose petal are all very nicely lifted. Silky tannins add to the wine's considerable charm.

The 2023 Haut-Bailly II is a blend of 64% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, picked from September 11 and 29. It has quite a potent bouquet with perfumed black fruit, touches of dark chocolate and mint, well-defined and focused. The palate is framed by powdery tannins and nicely balanced with gentle grip. There's moderate depth and a touch of white pepper toward the finish, actually gaining cohesion in the glass. The 2023 will need two or three years in bottle.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Ripe plum fruit, some dried fruit, a hint of violets, red cherries, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, round and fruity, a touch of nougat, fine, gentle tannins that carry well, some chocolate in the finish, mineral touch, already accessible, pleasant, almost Burgundian fruit in the after- taste.
