Gurgue (la) (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2023

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates: A Story of Passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton, from the renowned Bordeaux winemaking families Merlaut and Lurton, took over their family estates in the 1990s: Château Durfort-Vivens (2nd Growth in Margaux), Château Ferrière (3rd Growth in Margaux), Château Haut-Bages Libéral (5th Growth in Pauillac), and Château La Gurgue (Margaux).

Pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics, agroecology, and agroforestry, they constantly seek new practices to reveal their terroir and produce exceptional wines.

Château La Gurgue, the beauty of Margaux's terroirs

Château La Gurgue, acquired by the Merlaut family in 1978, has been run by Claire Villars Lurton since 1992. Located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, the 10-hectare vineyard has been certified organic since 2016 and biodynamic since 2018. Claire has brought out the best in the château's terroirs and defined a style of wine that is both seductive and sincere. Starting with the 2021 vintage, she has reintroduced the historic label with a text on the history of the estate and its takeover by the family.

The 2023 Château La Gurgue will be terrific, with beautiful red and darker fruits as well as some tobacco, graphite, and chocolate notes. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has fine tannins, and beautiful density. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 14% Petit Verdot, raised in 15% new French oak.

Sappy and enticing ruby red fruit character, black pepper spice, fragrant cumin, good uplift through the palate. 25hl/h yield, impacted not by frost or midlew but by the heat in September on the young vines, 3.6ph. Harvest September 13 to October 2.

The 2023 La Gurgue offers very good depth but is less expressive aromatically than it often is. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections lend plenty of character. There's a bit of tightness in the tannins that suggests heat stress may have been an issue. I am very interested to see what elevage does here.

The 2023 La Gurgue suffered a bit of frost on the Petit Verdot but was not touched by mildew, according to Claire Villars-Lurton. Picked at 25hL/ha, it has a crisp and pure bouquet with black cherries and a touch of violet—focused and delineated, though not complex. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, just a slight and actually welcome bitterness surfacing toward the saline finish. This is kind of an old-school Margaux, and I like that.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Floral, candied violet, black forest berries, blueberry, candied orange zest. Firm, tightly woven, fine heart cherry fruit, mineral, salty finish, a fresh food companion with fine tannins.

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and fully 13% Petit Verdot, the 2023 La Gurgue exhibits aromas of dark berries, licorice and boot polish, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy palate built around powdery tannins.

A fresh and focused red with a medium body and fine tannins. It’s crunchy, with good fruit concentration in the center-palate, showing plum and redcurrant highlights. Bright and firm at the end. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
