Gurgue (la) (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2022

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a story of passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton are among those people who are driven by their passion. They both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. These two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates in the early 90's: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry.
Claire and Gonzague, faithful to their deepest values, always search new practices that are adopted to their soils and allow them to reveal the terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce fine wines that matter.

Château La Gurgue, the beauty of Margaux's terroirs

Château La Gurgue was acquired by the Merlaut family in 1978. In 1992, Claire Villars Lurton took over the management of the estate after her mother, Bernadette Merlaut Villars, passed away. She is the third generation of woman to manage this estate. She has been carrying on her mother's work by revealing the beauty of the Château La Gurgue's terroir and by finding the style of its wine : seductive, true and sincere.

Its 10-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation and is contiguous to the vines of Château Margaux. The estate is certified in Organic Farming since 2016 and dualy certified in Biodynamics by Demeter and Biodyvin since 2018.

In order to give back to Château La Gurgue its letter of nobility, the packaging has evolved with the 2021 vintage: Claire Villars-Lurton has decided to return to the historical label with a presentation of its history and the family's takeover.

The 2022 vintage

Tasting notes

Château La Gurgue 2022 thus expresses the minerality of its terroir and the brightness of its fruit. The Petit Verdot (3 hectares mostly from mass selections and planted on fine gravels), which represents 17% of the blend, expresses itself in finesse, with power and spicy notes.

The combination of smoky and toffee aromas is unforgettable, and one can easily recognize the unique character of Claire’s wines with just one sniff. In the dry and hot year of 2022, the challenge for every winemaker is how to sort out the dried grapes. Château La Gurgue has successfully tackled this problem by using a “blower sorting machine”. Although the yield is only 25hl/ha, the fruitiness and acidity exhibit pure and smooth characteristics. If the tannins in the finish were to become softer and more delicate, this Margaux wine would truly shine.

This has the spicy edge that is clearly a vintage character, coupled with lift and rich sinewy muscles. A ripeness to the berry that is not always apparent in La Gurgue, leans into the vintage. 15% new oak for ageing.

The 2022 La Gurgue, which contains 17% Petit Verdot planted on gravelly soils instead of clay, has a tightly wound nose that demands coaxing to reveal a touch of black plum and a dab of cassis. It has fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a pleasant underlying bitterness that lends tension. It is nicely structured with just a touch of balsamic on the aftertaste. This is a good, solid La Gurgue that will benefit from two or three years in bottle.

The 2022 La Gurgue offers an intriguing mix of dense, pliant fruit and lifted aromatics that add notable flair. Crushed flowers, mint, spice, blood orange and white pepper are all lifted in the glass. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 17% Petit Verdot, with the high amount of Petit Verdot lending palpable aromatic presence and an exotic quality. La Gurgue is super distinctive in 2022. I would give this a good bit of aeration, as there is a bit of reduction today. This was raised in once-used barrels, concrete ovals, new oak and amphorae.

Lovely ripe aromatics, a touch herbal but concentrated, smells ripe. Clean with minerality at the fore, not rustic or harsh, tannins are well integrated, really soft and smooth, super gentle and calm. Very controlled perhaps lacks some vibrancy and a bit more density but this is really well worked. Juicy and red fruited, strawberries, raspberries and red cherries. Good persistence and really so easy to drink. A yield of 25hl/ha. Low extraction, 14% press wine, more than. usual. 3.6pH. Ageing: 12 months, 15% in new oak barrels, 35% in barrels of one wine.

The 2022 La Gurgue comes from a vineyard that now has more Petit Verdot that replaces Merlot from a selection massale, so that this vintage includes 17%. Picked September 9-30, matured in a prudent 15% new oak, it has a very pure bouquet with black plum and flecks of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft and pliant entry, lightly spiced, harmonious with a saline finish. Fine length and probably destined to be one of the most approachable wines of the appellation.

A solid Cru Bourgeois, the 2022 Château La Gurgue offers a pretty, floral perfume of red and black fruits, leafy herbs, and fresh earth. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Margaux with supple, integrated tannins, a solid mid-palate, and a good finish. It's certainly promising, if not outstanding.

The 2022 La Gurgue is plump and juicy, full of vintage 2022 radiance. Succulent red cherry, blood orange, mint, rose petal and spice make a strong first impression. This open-knit, plush Margaux is sure to be a crowd pleaser. I very much admire the purity here. Drinking window : 2025-2034

Spices, flowers, and crisp plum aromatics open the wine. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, bright and chewy, with a crunchy, red berry and peppery spice oriented finish. The wine is aged in 20% new, French oak, concrete eggs and foudres. The wine blends 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 17% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2025-2037.

The 2022 La Gurgue delivers aromas of dark berries, cherries and cassis, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and fleshy palate. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and fully 17% Petit Verdot, this pure, fruit-driven Margaux will be released under the old La Gurgue label from yesteryear.

Very fine and fruity with a medium body. Juicy brightness with blackcurrant, fresh rose stem and crushed stone undertones. Precise and focused. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
