Guiraud - Sauternes 2010

Château Guiraud has always been independent and forged its own path. It is one of the few in France to have created a grape variety conservatory. As early as 1996, the vineyard began a cultural revolution by moving towards biodiversity. In 2011, Château Guiraud became the first Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 to be certified "Organic Farming".

Since 1766, Château Guiraud has juggled between nonconformity with cultural and political disruptions and reinvention, always in pursuit of prestige. Today, Château Guiraud is owned by four wine and hospitality enthusiasts: Matthieu Gufflet, Peugeot Invest represented by its president Robert Peugeot, and two winemakers: Olivier Bernard and Stephan Von Neipperg.

The 2010 Guiraud is a little closed on the nose like the 2010 Climens and demands a lot of coaxing from the glass. Eventually it reveals scents of dried honey, fig and ginger but they feel muted at the moment. The palate is much better and more expressive with tangy marmalade and quince notes, good depth and fine tension. It is just a case of waiting for the nose to open because the palate really shows the potential here. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drink 2023-2060

Medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Guiraud explodes from the glass with baked pineapple, lemon tart and apple pie scents plus suggestions of acacia honey, jasmine tea, musk perfume and marzipan. The palate doesn’t disappoint either, exuding bold tropical flavors with a lively line of freshness and a long, perfumed finish.

The Guiraud 2010 seems a little more loose-knit on the nose compared to others, with lanolin and dried honey aromas gently unfurling in the glass, before revealing its mineral core – as if this wine is teasing you. The palate is well-balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is abundant clean and pure botrytized fruit and a crisp, linear finish that is very appealing. The oak appears to have been absorbed in recent months, leaving a very accomplished Guiraud. Drink now-2035.

A thick, unctuous style, with marzipan, dried pineapple, mango and dried guava notes leading to a good bolt of toasted almond and pie crust on the finish. A muscular, well-stuffed version that will need some time to settle in. Best from 2015 through 2030. –JM

Ripe lemon peel and orange. Some honey and vanilla with loads of new wood. Dense and very sweet on the palate with nice pure fruit and firm tannins from the oak that still needs time to soften. This Sauternes shows a wonderful fruit and excellent potential, but needs time. Try in 2018

The 2010 Guiraud, with its notes of dried candied peel, dried pineapple and fresh mangoes, is a very rich and unctuous Sauternes, thick on the palate but with sufficient acidity and depth to carry the richness. With its well-layered profile and balanced freshness, this Sauternes is lovely now but will evolve into a real beauty in about 10 years time.

Not especially distinctive nose – a bit low key – but there is clearly botrytis here. And then lovely precision and pear juice and delightful acidity, yet this is not scrawny nor that light. Pretty much correct.Drink 2016-2035

The 2010 Chateau Guiraud has fine purity and minerality on the nose, with touches of passion fruit and dried apricot, later quince joining the fray. The palate is very well-balanced with a lively entry of apricot, quince and a touch of hazelnut. The middle and finish demonstrate fine tension and a lot of freshness. Individual lots seemed to have more race than the final sample, and I suspect it will warrant a higher score once the final blend is in bottle.

Deep gold. Something sulphidey on the nose. Sweet and sticky rather than fine. Sheer mass. Sweet and interesting but not that intense. Marmalade and a bit of bitterness. Certainly makes an impression. Lilies; tropical flowers. Big and a bit of bruiser. RS 132g/l, TA 4.0. Drink 2018-2030
