Attractive blackcurrant and walnut character with some mineral and spice. Medium body. Fine tannins. Fresh finish. Not a big wine, but shows finesse and focus for the vintage.

Espresso, licorice, coffee bean and currants come through easily, making this soft, round, fruity, forward and already quite charming to drink, for all its round-textures, sweet fruits and chocolate on release. Drink from 2023-2035. 89-91

The 2021 Château Les Grands Chênes was picked from 30 September until 18 October. I actually prefer the nose here compared to the Magrez-Fombrauge: fresher and more delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with tobacco-tinged black fruit on the entry, a little laboured perhaps with a bit of chewiness on the finish. I suspect barrel maturation will shave some of its edges.

Parfümiert und duftig, frischer als in den Vorjahren, deutlich Barrique, Mokka. Im Gaumen ausgewogen, nicht überladen, die Gerbstoffe sind markant, jedoch nicht trocknend. Hat Charakter und wird früh Spass machen. 2025-2035 (Verkostet im April 2022. Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux)

Nez très fruits noirs avec un boisé dominant et relativement grillé. Bouche juteuse et fraiche en entrée mais très vite les tanins structurants durcissent un peu l'ensemble. A revoir.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon from proprietor Bernard Magrez, the 2021 Les Grands Chênes exhibits aromas of rich cherries, berries and loamy soil, framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand, with lively acids and a clean finish, it's a creditable effort from these gravel vineyards in Saint Christoly-Médoc. Amphorae increasingly complement barriques in the chai.
