Grand Puy Lacoste - Pauillac 2023

Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a grand cru that delights every wine lover

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating, as it is part of a family saga dating back to the 16th century. The 64-hectare vineyard, which surrounds the Château in a single block, extends over one of the outcrops where the first growths of the Médoc were born. It is one of the few estates whose land registry has remained unchanged since the 1855 classification.

Since the 16th century, the vineyard has been passed down from generation to generation, and through family alliances, remained in the same family until 1920, before returning to the Borie family in 1978. François-Xavier Borie, the current owner, has played a pivotal role in orchestrating a magnificent renaissance for this Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. He initiated a comprehensive revitalization effort that encompassed the entire estate. His substantial investments and relentless commitment to enhancing Grand-Puy-Lacoste have consistently elevated the quality of its wines, artfully capturing the finesse of its exceptional Pauillac terroir.

Each year during the en primeur campaign, there is the opportunity to package the wines in the famous 'Caisse Variation'. Developed exclusively for the estate and its wines, this case holds the equivalent of 12 bottles (9 liters) and includes: 1 Double Magnum, 2 Magnums, and 4 Bottles, all elegantly arranged in a wooden case. Whether it's for Grand-Puy-Lacoste or the more budget-friendly Lacoste-Borie, this case format is ideal for gifting on occasions such as births, weddings, anniversaries, or other special events.

Tasting notes:

On the nose there are hints of blackcurrant, spices, especially of pepper and black fruits. The whole has a pronounced lively minerality and a touch of graphite. In the mouth, the front of the palate is most precise and clean. This 2023 is well balanced with a pronounced vitality, together with a finish prolonged by ripe well-knit tannins. Yet again, we find with this fine vintage the expression of the great terroir of Grand Puy Lacoste, with its richness, complexity and elegance.

Quite a floral red that’s very youthful. Aromas of mulberries, black currants, licorice, lavender, olives and some oak spices. On the palate it is medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins and ripe, juicy fruit. Long at the end. Drink from 2029. From a vertical tasting at the winery.

The 2023 Grand Puy Lacoste has an understated bouquet that is beautifully defined, opening with blackberry, briar, cedar and light pencil box aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry, fine grip, quite linear and correct in style, in keeping with the GPL style. Fine grip on the finish with a tad more length than I noticed from barrel, this is a superb Pauillac that will require three or four years in bottle.

Cabernet sauvignon comes through beautifully. Lovely aromas of crushed raspberries, currants and pencil shavings follow through to a medium body with integrated tannins, pure fruit on the center palate and a creamy texture. Very drinkable now. Drink or hold.

The Grand Vin 2023 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste checks in as 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot (the 11th to the 28th of September) with the élevage in 75% new French oak. Its deeper plum hue is followed by beautiful aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, and flowers. This carries to a medium-bodied Pauillac with a pure, elegant mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and beautifully integrated oak. It's a little gem of a 2023 that has the pure, focused, elegant, yet concentrated style of the vintage.

Grand-Puy Lacoste (Pauillac; 77% Cabernet Sauvignon; 23% Merlot; a final yield of 48 hl/ha; 13.2% alcohol; tasted at the property with Emeline Borie). Lovely brambly notes with a wild, herbal and heathery streak that I somehow associate with Grand-Puy Lacoste. Spicy and peppery, more so that the 2022 and perhaps more dynamic too. Blackberries and a little redcurrant, bringing lift and freshness. A tight and densely charged mid-palate but a relatively narrow frame, accentuating the impression of concentration and, with it, a succulent and refreshing juiciness. Lots of refinement and classicism. The Merlot give a wonderful round plush frame for the somewhat more strict and linear Cabernet, creating lots of tension. Nice grippy, chewy tannins on the finish. Long with a gentle taper towards a distant horizon. Very pure and nicely composed. A very articulate expression of the vintage and appellation. Minty fresh on the finale.

Concentrated, full-bodied, vibrant, juicy, fresh, and rich, the wine displays its black, and red currants, blackberries, cigar box, and flowers with only a bit of coaxing. Vibrant, lifted, and energetic, but not overly bright, everything is in balance, with freshness, sweetness, chewy currants, and a savory, peppery-tinted finish that lingers. This is one of those wines that with aging, is a candidate for a higher score in a decade, or so. The wine is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon with 23% Merlot, 13.2% ABV, 3.6 pH. Picking took place September 11 - September 28. Drink from 2029 - 2060. 93-95 Pts.

We are in classic Grand Puy Lacoste territory here, great balance, good freshness, Pauillac typicity, less concentration than 2022, showing instead bright cassis and blackberry fruits, salted cracker edge, liquorice, graphite, spiced cocoa beans, and flashes of fresher redcurrants on the close of play. Great quality, and you can see the fine ageing potential stretching ahead. 75% new oak, rest one year old, around 60% of production in this 1st wine (this is similar each year, as here the vineyard footprint has not changed since 1855). Harvest September 11 to 28.

The 2023 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is powerful, reticent and shy, revealing notes of black cherry, gravel, scorched earth and licorice. It’s rich, ample and quite potent, marked by an intriguing mix of super-ripe Merlots and later-picked Cabernet. All of this fruit was picked before the September rain, so the tannins are a touch aggressive. Time in bottle should help this come together.

The 2023 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked September 11 to 28 at 48hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak. It has a classic "GPL" bouquet with blackberry, pencil box and light marine scents, obviously not as powerful as the previous vintage, yet in typical style, beautifully defined and focused. Just a touch of cracked black pepper surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip, just a light bitter edge lending tension and nerve. I perceive good depth here, but this is not a powerhouse of a Pauillac (is GPL ever?). It fans out toward the finish whilst maintaining control. There’s an impressive linearity to this wine, and thus I suspect it will require less bottle-age compared to recent vintages.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate or- ange zest, ripe cherry, a hint of cassis, fine oak savouriness, inviting bouquet. Juicy, fresh red fruit, finesse-rich structure, ripe, round tannins, salty-mineral, appears light-footed, lingers for a long time, delicate style with freshness and length.

Aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and violets introduce the 2023 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple wine that's seamless and sensual, with good depth at the core, beautifully integrated tannins and a lively, charming profile. It's a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot that was picked between September 11-28.
