Grand Puy Lacoste - Pauillac 2000

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating as it is a timeless family saga that traces its roots back to the 16th century. The name 'Grand-Puy' is derived from the ancient term 'puy,' signifying a 'hillock' or 'small height.' True to its namesake, the vineyard occupies elevated outcrops, boasting a terroir akin to that of the Médoc's premier growths.

In 1978 it became associated with the esteemed Borie family. François-Xavier Borie, the current owner, has played a pivotal role in orchestrating a magnificent renaissance for this Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. He initiated a comprehensive revitalization effort that encompassed the entire estate. His substantial investments and relentless commitment to enhancing Grand-Puy-Lacoste have consistently elevated the quality of its wines, artfully capturing the finesse of its exceptional Pauillac terroir.

Pas encore complètement ouvert, truffe noire, fruits noirs confits, kirsch, cerises en bocal, bouche fraîche, fruitée épicée, encore serrée en finale. Un vin qui demande encore de l'attente.

Bright medium ruby-red. Exotic black fruits and spices on the nose, with notes of chocolate, smoke and game; showing its 29% merlot component today. Rich, broad and chocolatey; sweet, creamy and superripe. A big, mouthfilling vintage for this chateau, combining a classic Pauillac medicinal character with the chocolatey ripeness of the vintage. Thick but nicely delineated, finishing with very broad, sweet tannins and excellent length. Like a more refined version of the 1990, says Francois-Xavier Borie.

This large-scaled wine has a saturated ruby/purple color and a big creme de cassis nose, with a hint of licorice and tobacco. Still somewhat closed, this deep, full-bodied, luscious, muscular offering exhibits ripe tannin, loads of fruit, and tremendous purity. This is a gorgeous example of one of the most popular wines in the Medoc. Its savory tannin and low acidity suggest it should be close to its plateau of drinkability in 4-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+.

Very racy. Licorice, berry and lead pencil, with flowers. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish. Very fine indeed. Best after 2010. 15,830 cases made

The large-scaled 2000 Grand Puy Lacoste's saturated purple color is accompanied by a perfume redolent with aromas of cassis, tobacco, and licorice. Deep, rich, muscular, and full-bodied, it is a prototype Pauillac emphasizing ripe cassis fruit and purity. There is plenty of tannin, but it is not out of balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

Grand Puy Lacoste's trademark characteristic in the top vintages, its creme de cassis fruit character, is abundantly displayed in the 2000, a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The wine exhibits a deep purple color, sweet cassis notes, superb ripeness, and full-bodied, concentrated, rich flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025.
