Grand Puy Ducasse - Pauillac 2019

From one of the lesser-known Pauillac crus classés, this wine shows plenty of fine structure as well as ripe black currant fruits from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is also the succulent fruitiness that shines, lending to a good future.

The 2019 Grand Puy Ducasse is a stunning wine. In 2019, the Grand Vin is statuesque and towering in its beauty, with tons of fruit intensity but none of the harder edges that have characterized some previous vintages. The 2019 has found a way to capture an intense, flamboyant expression of fruit without being too much, as some vintages have been. The
result is an absolutely stunning Grand Puy Ducasse that is also the best in recent memory. Raspberry jam, blood orange, mint, pomegranate and spice all build into the beautifully layered finish. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Grand-Puy-Ducasse has a very deep purple-black color, slowly unfurling in the glass to offer profound notes of baked black plums, warm cassis and blackberry jam with touches of cedar chest, menthol, mocha and black olives plus a waft of lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, with a firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the generous black fruit preserves, finishing with a lingering minty lift.

91-93+ The 2019 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is terrific and might just surpass the 2015, 2016, and 2017. Lots of beautiful blackcurrant, cedary incense, lead pencil, and a touch of damp earth all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a wonderful sense of balance and purity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous looking Pauillac.

The 2019 Grand Puy Ducasse has a clean, delineated, quite pure bouquet with perfumed blackcurrants, raspberries, cedar and pencil box aromas that would just benefit from a tad more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, a fine bead of acidity, cohesive and harmonious with a lovely saline/briny note that surfaces towards the unusually (for this estate) finish. This is one of the best Grand Puy Ducasse wines that I have encountered from barrel. Excellent. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Fleshy, ripe and loaded with cassis, blackberry and espresso, the wine is medium/full-bodied, round and juicy, which is perfect for all the fruit and mineral essences in the long, vibrant finish. 91-93 Pts

This is chewy and structured with slightly austere tannins, but shows solid intensity. Ripe yet fresh fruit. Tannic.

Lovely deep purple colour gives this an attractive Pauillac strength both visually and on the firm cassis-led attack. This is attractive, with well-worked but plentiful tannins and touches of austerity in the way you hope for in a young Pauillac. This is well balanced with firm cassis fruits and has a chewiness to the tannins that becomes more apparent on the finish. Spice and fresh mint leaf add interest and typicity. Tasted twice three weeks apart. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036

Fresh, subtly gravelly, ripe Cabernet nose; rich midweight Pauillac, fresh in acidity, with
a nice concentration and a finely firm tannin; classically gravel-aroma’d Cabernet flavor, long,
savory, sinewy textured but without coarseness, very aromatic, very satisfying, and with excellent pebbly length. Slightly old-fashioned Pauillac, in the nicest sense. Its sinews notwithstanding, with rich-enough fare this will be a most attractive Pauillac proposition relatively early. 2025–40+.
