Grand Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion to follow!

Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising property among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion, with its "pied de côte" vineyard producing high quality wines.

In the 90's, the estate was already a forerunner: important works have been undertaken to build an underground cellar and the property has been advised by Michel Rolland for twenty years. Today, Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony are the third generation at the helm of the estate.

The 2023 vintage

Jean-Antoine Nony tells you about the vintage:

Climatic conditions:

A classic spring, with no excesses, was followed by a rainy June, leading to unprecedented mildew pressure. Fortunately, this situation was kept under control and had no negative impact. Then came the hottest summer on record, with a scorching August. However, the heat was accompanied by some rain, which contributed to the growth of the grapes and good yields.

Tasting notes:

The final result is very satisfying. The ripeness is excellent and the balance well respected. The 2023 wines are very harmonious, with a remarkable balance between density and elegance.

The 2023 Grand Mayne has a refined bouquet, red and black fruit with touches of tobacco and sous-bois, classical in style and very much in the mold of contemporary Grand Mayne. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a superb line of acidity with a clean and precise finish that fans out wonderfully. What a classy Saint-Émilion.

Very pretty, complex and serious nose of subtle dark spices, fresh blackberries, plums and graphite. Medium- to full-bodied with precise, polished tannins. Lightly peppery in the lasting finish. medium velvety texture that is polished and caressing. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drink from 2026.

Red and black fruits, chocolaty herbs, graphite, and a kiss of solid minerality all emerge from the 2023 Château Grand Mayne, a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, beautifully balanced 2023 that has plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a juicy, lively profile with tons to love.

Grand Mayne (Saint Émilion; tasted at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin). Almost a little like Dassault in its cool, rich black cherry fruit, liberally enrobed with cedar – though perhaps here the fruit is a shade lighter in hue (with more berries and fewer cherries) and the cedar joined by graphite and pencil shavings. A lovely cassis signature on the palate too. Long and linear, slowly tapering to an asymptotic finish. Excellent.

Flowers cherries, plums, and licorice pop in the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant, juicy, and silky, with sweetness, and lift in the plummy, licorice oriented finish. Drink from 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Bright ruby red, vivid depths to the body of the wine, well balanced, kick of eucalyptus and mint, hint of grilled cloves, with clear juice and limestone grip running through the black cherry and damson fruit. The Nony family has produced another exceptional vintage here. 50% new. 49hl/ha yield. Possible upscore in bottle.

A heady, exotic Saint-Émilion, the 2023 Grand-Mayne makes a strong opening statement. Readers will find a wine of dimension and textural resonance. Blackberry, chocolate, licorice, spice and dried herbs are all beautifully amplified. This is impressive.

The 2023 Grand Mayne was picked from September 11 to October 5 at 49hL/ha, matured in 60% new oak. It has a fragrant and pure bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit, wilted roses and a light marine scent. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen thread of acidity and a sense of mineralité toward the finish. Nicely poised throughout, this is a very delicious and refined Saint-Émilion in the making, deserving four or five year in bottle.

Dark garnet, deep core, purple reflections, brighter at the edge. Restrained fruit, del- icate blueberry, black cherry, candied orange zest. Medium body, red cherries, vivid tannins, slightly drying in the finish, medium length, some nougat in the aftertaste.

A very fine-grained red with tannins that caress your palate. Medium body. Reserved fruit character. Shows a nicely crafted expression already.
