Grand Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion to follow!

Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising property among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion, with its "pied de côte" vineyard producing high quality wines.

In the 90's, the estate was already a forerunner: important works have been undertaken to build an underground cellar and the property has been advised by Michel Rolland for twenty years. Today, Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony are the third generation at the helm of the estate. They are part of Bordeaux Oxygen, an association of young producers/owners, among which Mathieu Cuvelier from Clos Fourtet, Jean Triaud from Gloria and Saint-Pierre, or Juliette Bécot from Beau Séjour Bécot, which promote their wines in a dynamic and different way.

The quality of the wine is constantly improving. The 2022 vintage is clearly a new milestone in the history of Grand Mayne.  This particularly successful vintage is praised by the international press, like Antonio Galloni who has rated the wine 94-96 points, saying, 'It's a superb Grand Mayne in the making'.

An amazing vintage!
2022 is truly amazing! We went through all the feelings, from blooming to the harvest, this vintage will have us first stressed, anxious, scared and then hopeful, surprised and finally fulfilled.
The clay and limestone terroirs are real sponges and have therefore reacted as a perfect water regulator. Wonderfully regulating the water supply of the plant.

The balance between matter, acidity and sugars are exceptional. The result is a Grand Mayne with a very silky and velvety texture and a suave and extremely long mouthfeel. A mature fruit, racy, all-in elegance. This 2022 vintage will undoubtedly be one of the vintages that will mark the history of Grand Mayne.

The powdery tannins from limestone dance on the palate, while the silky notes of mulberry and raspberry twirl on the tongue. Château Grand Mayne has truly reached its pinnacle in the 2022 vintage. As an elegant wine, I never worry about its acidity. Instead, I am more concerned about its ability to maintain sufficient concentration. In the intensely rich 2022 vintage, its delicate body has been infused with vigor, transforming from a canary to an eagle soaring high in the sky. It is an absolute masterpiece that combines power and poetry, it is my favorite vintage of Franc Mayne.

Impressive, textured with depth to the construction overall. Redcurrant and black cherry fruits, different levels of sweetness and acidity, helps add complexity, with a lick of liquorice that runs throughout. Nony family owners, 41hl/h yield, clay limestone soils. Harvest 8-20 September.

More oaky and firm than it was during the en primeur tasting, the 2022 Grand Mayne reveals an oaky, introverted bouquet of oak, spices, espresso roast and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it has a fleshy core of fruit and an assertive, youthful tannic frame that segues into a long yet firm and somewhat dry finish. This is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

The 2022 Château Grand Mayne checks in as 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, and it hit 14.5% alcohol, which is well with normal ranges. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a concentrated, richly textured, balanced wine that has ample chocolate, red and black fruit, subtle leather, graphite, and sappy herbs and floral nuances. With medium to full body, ripe tannins, and outstanding length, it's beautifully done and has a terrific mix of finesse, elegance, and concentration.

2027-2044 95/100

The 2022 Grand Mayne has quite an intense bouquet yet it is well defined with blackberry, raspberry, light cedar notes and a touch of undergrowth. This gains delineation in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a vanillary entry, but there is real depth and composure to this Saint-Émilion. It has impressive weight, lacquering the mouth toward the finish. It deserves several years in bottle because there is immense promise.

Blackberries, black olives and blueberries with crushed-stone character on both the nose and palate. It’s medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a creamy texture. Extremely well-made. Best after 2030.

The 2022 Grand Mayne is a big, heady wine. Dark fruit, chocolate, new leather and licorice open in an ample, explosive Saint-Émilion loaded with character. Blood orange, spice, menthol and mocha appear later, adding aromatic lift and vibrancy to play off all that richness. There's certainly a lot of wine here. Gorgeous. Tasted two times.

Plump and nicely weighted on the palate. Lovely fragrance and black fruit characters which are clean and pure and inviting. The tannins are almost chewy, powdery and gently fleshy, well integrated, coating the mouth with a crushed stone, liquorice freshness that is really appealing. You can feel the power underneath, clearly concentrated but delivered with precision and detail. A touch 'hot' and spiced on the finish, but there's lots to like here. Still a little compact and reserved but excellent ageing potential.

The 2022 Grand Mayne was picked from 8 to 20 September and needed time to settle in the glass. Black cherries, crushed strawberry, graphite and licorice aromas appear with time. This needs its barrel maturation to cohere the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, slightly vanilla entry. The new oak is prominent at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit to soak that up. Indeed, a second sample demonstrates much more precision and sophistication on the finish. Bon vin.

Deep crimson. Intense pure dark cherry, plum cassis aromas with hints of mocha. Generously concentrated wine with ample dark cherry, plum, blackcurrant fruits and plentiful chocolaty/ soupy tannins. Finishes firm and long. Very chocolaty and dense with underlying savoury notes. (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon 60% new oak)

The Nony family has produced a silky, intense, balanced but fully charged wine in 2022, with muscular tannic construction, plenty of layers, edges of smoked caramel, blueberry and bilberry fruit, deep colour extraction, cinammon and clove that make the oak impact pretty evident. This is impressive, with ageing ability.

The 2022 Grand Mayne is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of black cherries, blueberry pie, and sassafras slowly emerge from the glass, giving way to touches of garrigue, Sichuan pepper, and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate delivers firm, rounded tannins and a lively backbone, jam packed with black fruit preserves flavors, finishing long and peppery.

Darker plums, currants, iron, and leathery nuances, as well as plenty of background spicy oak, emerge from the 2022 Château Grand Mayne, a ripe, medium to full-bodied, straight-up sexy 2022 with sweet tannins and a great finish. Plush, hedonistic, and balanced are the key words here, and I'd be happy with bottles in the cellar. Tasted multiple times, this should easily be in the same ballpark quality-wise as the 2019 and 2020.

Elegant, floral, fresh, and loaded with sweet, ripe, plums, cherries, licorice, and cocoa, the wine is medium-boded, refined, vibrant and silky and while it can be enjoyed in its youth, it is only going to get better with age. Drink from 2025-2045.

The 2022 Grand Mayne is a fabulous example of the year. Rich and radiant, it offers up sweet red cherry/plum fruit, spice, graphite, mocha, dried flowers and a kiss of sweet French oak. This generous, plush Saint-Émilion deftly marries textural richness with energy as it shows off the unique balance that makes the best wines of this vintage so alluring. There is a bit of new oak that needs to integrate, but there is more than enough depth for that to happen. The 2022 is beautifully put together and poised in the early going. It’s a superb Grand Mayne in the making.

The 2022 Grand Mayne offers up generous aromas of sweet berry fruit, spices, espresso roast and new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate with a broad, velvety attack and a deep core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chewy finish. This is a ripe, gourmand Saint-Émilion that represents a generous but balanced interpretation of the vintage. If its élevage remains in the background by the time it's in bottle, it may make my review look conservative.
