Grand Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Château Grand Mayne, a Saint-Emilion to follow!

Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising property among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion, with its "pied de côte" vineyard producing high quality wines.

In the 90's, the estate was already a forerunner: important works have been undertaken to build an underground cellar and the property has been advised by Michel Rolland for twenty years.

Today, Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony are the third generation at the helm of the estate. They are part of Bordeaux Oxygen, an association of young producers/owners, among which Mathieu Cuvelier from Clos Fourtet, , Jean Triaud from Gloria and Saint-Pierre, or Juliette Bécot from Beau Séjour Bécot, which promote their wines in a dynamic and different way.

The 2021 vintage

Jean-Antoine Nony tells you the story of this vintage: https://bit.ly/GrandMayne2021

A stressful vintage!

The 2021 vintage was a particularly stressful vintage for winegrowers. The cycle of the vine begins early with a very early bud burst (March 17), then we had two periods of frost which we managed well except for one plot which was badly affected. Flowering is very beautiful, it begins and ends under the sun then followed a significant period of rain. The summer is hot but not excessive
(maximum 27°C) giving a slow maturity with a lull in the sanitary pressure. The state of the vineyard is very healthy, allowing good maturity to be reached with good balance.

The 2021 wines are proving to be very well balanced, elegant with a nice tension, a lot of freshness and length.
2021 has everything of a classic vintage combining elegance and balance without excess.

The 2021 Grand Mayne has a gorgeous bouquet with floral scents—violets and peony. Quite lush but delineated black plummy fruit and hints of cedar emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, silky smooth in texture with a silver b

The 2021 Château Grand Mayne showed beautifully, with a spicy, red and black-fruited, complex profile as well as medium-bodied richness and depth. This forward, charming, elegant 2021 has terrific overall balance, and while I like it today, it should benefit from just a few years of bottle age and shine over the following decade.

The 2021 Grand Mayne offers up rich aromas of crème de cassis, fruitcake and toasty new oak, followed by a medium-bodied palate with an ample attack that segues into a mid-palate built around powdery tannins and tangy acids that carry through to the somewhat metallic finish.

Lightly framed but with clarity and precision. Quite lean and direct, not in a harsh way, but this is focussed on the purity of fruit, high acidity and delicacy of the slightly chalky tannins. It's silky and fresh with mouthwatering acidity and fun strawberry juicy flavours but is missing just a touch more push. Still, it's easy to drink and enjoy, balanced with each element in place and nothing trying too hard.

Another quality Saint-Emilion is the 2021 Château Grand Mayne, a medium-bodied, elegant, straight and focused barrel sample that has the hallmark red and blue fruit profile of the vintage, some spicy oak, hints of flowers, ripe tannins, and a good finish. 89-91+

Medium-deep crimson. Fresh red plum, cassis vanilla aromas with inky notes. Well concentrated red plum, raspberry cassis flavours, fine loose-knit gravelly tannins and vanilla notes. Finishes chalky and crisp. 75% merlot, 25% cabernet franc. 18 months in 50% new and 50% seasoned oak. 13.7% alc

Earthy, plums licorice, flowers and a touch of cocoa on the nose creates the enticing bouquet. The freshness in the bright red fruits shines in the soft, silky, vibrant, medium-bodied, savory-edged, coffee bean tinted palate. Drink from 2023-2045. 91-93

Here is a wine where the touch of smoked oak does a good job of filling out the mid palate, clear clove and tar, 50% new oak 33hl/h yield. Abrupt on the finish, a little austere, but there is careful extraction and a sense of precision. Tasted twice.

The 2021 Grand Mayne has a pure, sensual bouquet of perfumed red and blue fruit, quite floral in style. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine tannins, and quite mineral-driven, leading to a poised, persistent finish. This is another excellent wine from Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony.

The 2021 Grand Mayne is a success, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries, sweet soil tones and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively and supple, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, it represents a strong performance. Tasted three times.

Dark chocolate, liquorice and blackcurrants on the nose, smells aromatic and appealing with perfumed floral touches too. Smooth and round, it has a lovely delicacy to it, the bright strawberry and raspberry fruit given a savoury and mineral feel from crushed stones, pencil lead and creamy chalk. Lightly framed in terms of texture, the tannins fine and velvety, just gripping the tongue with a crushed stone element with a pulse of energy running through from start to finish. This is playful, easy to enjoy yet also has a serous dark liquorice tone with excellent precision of fruit. Hard not to like with the terroir on show. A very good example this year! I love it!!
