Grand Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017

Château Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion to follow!

Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising property among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion, with its "pied de côte" vineyard producing high quality wines.

In the 90's, the estate was already a forerunner: important works have been undertaken to build an underground cellar and the property has been advised by Michel Rolland for twenty years. Today, Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony are the third generation at the helm of the estate. They are part of Bordeaux Oxygen, an association of young producers/owners, among which Mathieu Cuvelier from Clos Fourtet, Jean Triaud from Gloria and Saint-Pierre, or Juliette Bécot from Beau Séjour Bécot, which promote their wines in a dynamic and different way.

The quality of the wine is constantly improving. The 2022 vintage is clearly a new milestone in the history of Grand Mayne.  This particularly successful vintage is praised by the international press, like Antonio Galloni who has rated the wine 94-96 points, saying, 'It's a superb Grand Mayne in the making'.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Grand Mayne features scents of warm black and red plums, boysenberries and fragrant earth plus wafts of cedar, unsmoked cigars and bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate has a rugged, chewy frame and just enough savory flavors, finishing on a stewed tea note. Drinking Window : 2020 - 2030. 89+

The 2017 Grand Mayne offers good depth and persistence, but it also feels very compact and dominated by oak and torrefaction notes, alongside dried herbs and menthol. The 2017 is attractive, but it was far more expressive from barrel; let's see where it goes. 90+

Showing well, the 2017 Chateau Grand Mayne reveals a more ruby/purple color as well as complex notes of savory red and black fruits, sandalwood, flowery incense, and spice. With some background oak, medium to full body, and present tannins, it's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 10-15 years or more.

Floral, fraise écrasée, bouche large, moelleuse, bonne matière, élégant, finale relevée, joli fruit, cerise en finale, belle fraîcheur.

Loads of red and black fruits, hints of sandalwood, incense and dried flowers emerge from the 2017 Château Grand Mayne. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and rounded on the palate, I love its tannin quality. With rock solid mid-palate depth and plenty of length, it should end up being an outstanding wine.

Nez profond sur les fruits mûrs. La bouche est pleine et fraîche, centrée et vineuse, avec une belle longueur. Très jolie réussite.

An exuberant, rich wine, the 2017 Grand Mayne is deep, pliant and creamy. Cedar, smoke, licorice, tobacco and grilled herbs give the 2017 striking aromatic layers to play off the luscious fruit. This is a decidedly exotic, sumptuous style, but it all works well, even if the new oak and torrefaction flavor are a bit dominant today. Hopefully aging can take care of some of that. There is quite a bit of potential here, that much is evident. Louis Mitjavile consults. Tasted two times.

This is a sweet, soft, polished, medium-bodied wine. Forward with bright cherries and black raspberries, licorice and just a hint of espresso, the tannins are soft and the finish has a bright, plummy appeal.

The 2017 Grand Mayne has quite a powerful, voluminous bouquet with red berry fruit, smoke and truffle aromas, not quite delivering the same level of delineation as the previous vintage but still nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, clean and precise with a fine bead of acidity. It is a lighter style of Grand Mayne compared to the wines of ten years ago, more nimble on its feet. The finish is lively, uncomplicated and quite mineral-driven, completing what is a fine follow-up to the 2016, though this will drink earlier.

The 2017 Grand Mayne is deep garnet-purple in color and offers up notions of cassis, red currant jelly and plum preserves with hints of cigar box and incense. Medium to full-bodied, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Cloves and tar dominate on the attack, which works well within the vintage framework, but the oak is bit of a prop, meaning that the weight through the mid-palate acts as an anchor rather than propelling you along. There's no doubt that there are some good elements here, and it's a wine that has the potential to unfurl, but be aware that it is struggling a little to find its balance at present.

Well-focused, with bright raspberry, plum and red licorice notes racing along, set against a backdrop of brambly structure.—J.M.
