Grand Mayne - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015

Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising vineyard among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion.
Jean-Antoine Nony, who has been managing the property for a decade now, said recently in a local newspaper : “My goal is to become 1er Grand Cru Classé… We were really closed to it with the 2012 ranking”.
In the early 90’s, important works have been done to build an underground cellar, and Michel Rolland has been the consultant since the early 70’s : the vineyard was already a forerunner.
Today, Jean-Antonine Nony is part of Bordeaux Oxygen, an association of young producers/owners, among which Mathieu Cuvelier from Clos Fourtet, Basile Tesseron from Lafon Rochet, Jean Triaud from Gloria and Saint-Pierre, or Juliette Bécot from Beau Séjour Bécot, promote their wines in a dynamic and different way.

The 2015 Grand Mayne has a candied bouquet with high-toned red cherry, crème de cassis and mulberry aromas, well defined and generous with flecks of dark chocolate developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and very well judged acidity. I appreciate the focus and freshness in this Saint-Émilion, nicely poised with a persistent, quite mineral finish. A superb wine from Jean-Antoine Nony. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

The 2015 Grand Mayne has an exemplary bouquet, one decidedly less extravagant than previous vintages, with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and asphalt aromas gently wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and tensile. I love the shimmering black fruit here laced with pencil lead and spice, while the finish is much more focused and refined than vintages ten years earlier. Superb. Anticipated maturity: 2021 - 2045.

The 2015 Grand Mayne is powerful, ample and racy, with notable textural breadth and resonance. Super-riper red cherry, tobacco, mint, orange peel and spice all develop in the glass. Forward and sumptuous, as it was from barrel, Grand Mayne is gorgeous today. Michel Rolland and Louis Mitjaville consult.

The 2015 Grand Mayne is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with an earthy nose of damp soil and fungi with a core of red and black plums, black berries and dried herbs. The full-bodied mouth is rich and earthy with a firm structure and plenty of freshness, finishing long.

Roasted cedar and tobacco notes lead the way in this slightly rustic version, with red and black currant paste and warm fig fruit in reserve. Chewy grip holds the finish, with the cedar accent lingering. Has character but lacks the vibrant fruit of the vintage. Best from 2020 through 2030. 5,417 cases made.  –JM

A tight and silky red with berry, chocolate and black-tea character. Full-bodied, tight and integrated. Fresh finish. Drink in 2020.

Notes of blackcurrants, plums, chocolate, and lead pencil emerge from the ripe, sexy styled 2015 Château Grand Mayne. This full-bodied, opulent, beautifully concentrated 2015 hits the palate with loads of fruit and texture, yet stays balanced, has terrific purity of fruit, and ripe tannin. I was only able to taste this one time, but wow, what a wine. It should be at its best from 2020-2035.

Deepish crimson. Expressive aroma of dark fruit and cedar, complex and a touch smoky. Some oaky sweetness on the palate but overall it’s cool and dark and fragrant, the alcohol not getting in the way. Chewy chocolate finish.

Silky, plush, concentrated and showing a lot more depth than I ever recall tasting at Grand Mayne, this wine has lush, polished curves for tannins, a wealth of sensuous ripe berries and licorice and a splash of liqueur in the finish. From 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reached 14.5% with a pH of 3.65.

Charry, chocolate aromas. Supple and refined on the palate with a depth of generous fruit. Tight, firm finish. Powerful and long with ageing potential. 2023-2035

The 2015 Grand Mayne has a ripe small, dark cherry and mulberry scented bouquet, very perfumed with cassis scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very elegant and poised, part of a new style of Grand Mayne that is much more refined than the vintages of the 1990s and 2000s. In a word, what Jean-Antoine Nony and his team have made here is a "stylish" Saint Emilion.

Rich, ample and concentrated, the 2015 Grand Mayne is a terrific example of Saint-Émilion done in a modern, sumptuous style. Ripe, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red cherry, raspberry, mocha, espresso and menthol. The 2015 is dense, powerful and voluptuous to the core, with terrific harmony. This is an impressive showing. Michel Rolland and Louis Mitjaville consult. Tasted three times.

Bordeaux 2015 - St-Émilion and satellites | Articles | JancisRobinson.com Savoury, toasty, fun on the nose with lots of fruit. Big and broad and not the subtlest but with massive sweet fruit. Drying end - very. Drink 2024-2032

Couleur sombre et intense. Nez discret. Bouche ronde, juteuse, savoureuse, manquant un peu d'allant au milieu, mais rattrapé par une finale longue et sèveuse. L'élevage devrait le mettre plus en forme. Bonne longueur.

A juicy and rich red with roasted coffee, chocolate and ripe fruit. Full body, velvety tannins. A little over extracted now but could come around with proper barrel aging.

Nicely packed together, with juicy raspberry and plum paste flavors buttressed by licorice and ganache. Shows some energy through the finish, but this is more about heft than grace.—J.M.
