The 2009 Grand Mayne has an opulent bouquet with well defined kirsch and red plum aromas, hints of cough candy emerge with time. It remains focused and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, layers of candied red fruit laced with orange peel and marmalade. It builds beautifully towards the finish. Excellent. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Grand Mayne 2009 is somewhat reduced on the nose although it opens nicely with aeration to offer lovely ripe dark plum and blueberry jam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and succulent on the mouth. Soft, plush and generous with layers of ripe plum and Hoi Sin infused black fruit, it leads to a composed ravishing finish. Tasted January 2013.

Very dark, with almost heady blueberry and plum confiture flavors at the core, wrapped with extra cassis and boysenberry notes. Long and liberally laced with toast and mocha, with a licorice snap edge on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2024. 4,000 cases made. –JM

Another St.-Emilion smart buy for consumers, Grand-Mayne has made a number of top wines (except for a short period when they had some TCA issues). This is a full-throttle effort filled with blueberry and black raspberry fruit, perhaps slightly more oak than oakaphobes would prefer, but a full-bodied, concentrated, ageworthy style. Sweet tannin, low acidity and ripe fruit suggest this well-made St.-Emilion should drink nicely for 15-20 years.

Robe sombre.

Reife Frucht, etwas Powidl, kandierte Orangenzesten, Nougat, feine Gewürzanklänge.

Tasted at the Saint Emilion UGC, this has a ripe, black cherry, yellow plum and boysenberry nose with a touch of damson fruit. Moderate definition. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced with fine tannins. I like the delineation and freshness on this Saint Emilion. Whereas in some years they have flirted with over-extraction, this is much more restrained with finer clarity and precision on the finish. Excellent. Tasted March 2010.

Rich, concentrated. Lovely depth of fleshy fruit. Tannins firm but suave. Long, fresh finish. Seductive and refined. Drink 2015-2028.

Alcool 14° ; pH 3,75 : IPT 70.

Another example of the back to back success stories in this vintage. The 2009 is a solid wine offering a deep opaque purple accompanied by mulberries, cherry liqueur, flower, pencil-shavings, and crème de cassis scents. Dense, full-bodied, crammed, and plush with its caressing texture, fabulous ripeness, and copious cassis and mulberry liqueur flavor. This complete, substantive, and generously fruit giving St. Emilion is delicious. Give it 2 years and enjoy it for the next 11-13 years thereafter. Maturity period 2013-2023.

I enjoy this wine in nearly every vintage (the 1998 was one of my all-time favorites), and while the 2009 may not be better than the 1998, it is an impressive effort. Moreover, it represents a great value in top-notch Bordeaux. Its opaque purple color is followed by plenty of blueberry, boysenberry, and raspberry fruit notes intermixed with subtle hints of graphite and oak. The wine possesses ripe tannin, full-bodied power, admirable purity, and impressive amounts of glycerin and sweetness from its high ripeness (but not overripeness) in the finish. Consume it over the next 15+ years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2025.

Blueberry and floral aromas follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a long finish. Stylish and polished. This is a more reserved style and I like it.

Very little nose. Thick and sweet start and then quite painfully concentrated tannins and acid. Drying finish. Really not much fun – a bit too concentrated? Hint of floral scent on the finish.Drink 2017-2030
