A powerful, authoritative wine, the 2014 Grand Mayne possesses remarkable pedigree and class. Black cherries, smoke, licorice, tobacco and menthol all hit the palate in a vertical, structured St.-Emilion built for the cellar. Readers will have to be patient here. Tasted twice.

The Château Grand-Mayne 2014 has a perfumed, floral and endearing bouquet with beautifully interwoven new oak. There is a little more sophistication here compared to the previous three vintages. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity on the entry, threaded through ripe red cherries mixed with mint and star anis, finishing with a spicy flourish. This is a very fine Saint Emilion from Jean-Antoine Nony that scored above my expectations.

Balanced and sweet with upfront sweet plum and cherry with round, ripe tannins. A well made Grand Mayne that is approachable young and should evolve well over the next decade.

Bright crimson. Rather smudgy nose – nothing exaggerated but pretty casual. A little dry on the end and some lack of freshness. Sweet but possibly picked a little late? Or too much work to diminish the natural acidity?

Dunkles Granat, recht satt in der Mitte. Zugängliches, leicht milchiges Bouquet, frische Brombeeren und Cassisnoten, wenig Druck aber dafür royal ausgelegt mit seinem erhabenen, besonders feinen Duft. Im Gaumen samtig, sehr fein, die Tannine strahlen eine gewisse Süsse aus und endet mit einer besonderen Klasse. Ein grosses Kompliment muss man generell seinen Gerbstoffen machen. Da passt alles. Und das war nur bei wenigen Saint-Emilion Premiers der Fall. Ich hatte ihn - beim ersten Kontakt im prall gefüllten, nervigen Saal auf Clos Fourtet nur mit 17/20 bewertet. Und als Abschluss in aller Ruhe nochmals auf Belgrave beim grossen Dourthe-Tasting nach verkostet. Das war richtig erholend. Und ich hoffe insgeheim irgendwann noch einmal den extrem grossen 1998er Grand-Mayne nochmals trinken zu dürfen. 18/20 2023 – 2038

92–94. Barrel Sample. This is a structured wine, with solid, smoky tannins. It has a strong core of dryness, tough at the edges even if rich in the middle. Blackberries and dark plum skins dominate the fruit flavors. It is going to develop well, although slowly.

Aspect intense mais pas saturé. La prise de bois ne masque pas la finesse du fruit, bien présent, ample
et exprimé sans brutalité extractive ni raideur. « On sort de millésimes compliqués, il fallait résister à
la tentation de forcer l’extraction » rappelle Jean-Antoine Nony. La sagesse même !
