Gloria - Saint-Julien 2022

Gloria, a masterpiece shaped by a genuine family

In the world of wine, family is a much-flaunted value; many talk about it, yet few experience it quite like the Triauds. The story starts at the cusp of the Second World War, when Henri Martin, whose grandfather was a winemaker at Gruaud-Larose, acquired plots of vines from a number of classified growths in Saint-Julien, patiently building "his own" vineyard, Château Gloria. Work of a lifetime, Henri Martin devoted thirty years' hard work to finding its lustre. It has now become one of the Medoc's most famous "non-classified growths". Then, in the mid 70s, the family business was boosted by the arrival of his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud. This arrival marked the beginning of a 40-year carreer for this charismatic man with a wonderful sense of humor. Henri Martin and Jean-Louis Triaud worked hard, side by side, to develop both family estates. Gloria, the seductive, voluptuous and surprising wine features, along with Saint-Pierre, among "the greatest value wines in the whole of Bordeaux".

Today, Jean Triaud, along with his wife, Caroline, and his brother-in-law, Orphée Amougou, is the third generation at the helm of the family estates. And the 4th is already on board. Thus, this family knows how to work collaboratively to preserve and to pass on this magnificent family legacy. In 2021, to achieve that goal, they have launched the conversion of the vineyard to Organic Farming.

The 2022 vintage

Sacha Le Baube Triaud tells you about the vintage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM9l9E2sKZA&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=44

"The vintage of 2022, we will remembered! Managing drought was a priority for us (no leaf removal, soil work, application of herbal teas). The health condition is impeccable, the berries have reached perfect ripeness. The wines have a very deep purple color, highly aromatic, and a complete and fleshy mouthfeel. Undoubtedly a wine of immediate pleasure, combining great aging potential."

In 2022, Château Gloria’s second vintage since transforming to organic farming, stands out with a more refined and distinct aroma compared to the previous style. Despite the challenge of expressing freshness in the hot and dry vintage, this wine got it exceptionally. Its succulent taste, coupled with a naturally silky body from the gravel and sandy soils, provides a sense of peace on the entire palate. Even consumed at a young age, it can be easily enjoyed.

The 2022 Gloria has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of minty blackberries, tobacco leaf and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's seamless and charming, with good balance and a flavorful finish. It's a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot.

Deep plum colour, plenty of tannic grip that delivers poise and a frame that holds the deeply concentrated spices, sandalwood, campfire, cassis, blueberry, eucalyptus and mint. Edge of exuberance without going overboard. In biodynamic conversion. An upscore from En Primeur.

Cassis, spicy oak, exotic blue fruits, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Gloria, a concentrated yet beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied effort from this team. It has terrific purity, a chalky sense of minerality, ample tannins, and a great finish. The 2022 is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, aged 14 months in barrel. Hide bottles for 4-6 years if you can and enjoy over the following two decades.

Superbe ! 2028-2049 95/100

The 2022 Gloria, bottled in July 2024, has a tightly wound nose that is not as immediate as other Saint-Juliens alumni, though it gains harmony and purity with time. Pencil box and light sous-bois scents percolate through. This has wonderful precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture. It's expressive in terms of Merlot (35% of the blend) with a splash of soy on the finish. This Gloria has much to offer but needs three or four more orbits around the sun in bottle.

Quite a scented and fresh Gloria with lovely fragrance and firmness. Nothing overstated this year, showing beautiful texture and restraint. This initial balance as well as sharp-etched tannins will give it the ability to age. Drink from 2028.

The 2022 Gloria is bold, punchy and super-expressive. In this vintage, Gloria has a bit more mid-palate richness and overall heft than most years. Red fruit, blood orange, mocha, spice, new leather and cedar build as this showy Saint-Julien opens in the glass.

A pretty violet note leads off before the core of kirsch, linzer torte and plum sauce starts to yawn awake. Licorice snap and bramble are injected into the finish, along with an apple wood accent. Shows grip and focus. For fans of the gutsy style. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2038. 17,000 cases made.

Juicy and alive, energetic from the start, bright and vibrant with juicy, well-integrated tannins plumped up concentrated dark fruit giving the strength and richness. Broad and full with lots to offer, appealing and easy to enjoy with a sweet succulence at the end that lifts the whole palate and makes you want to try it again. Some salty, mineral touches on the finish too gives a nice lingering mineral flavour. Tasted twice. 6% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. A yield of 34hl/ha. Harvest 12-26 September

The 2022 Gloria was picked from 12-26 September and matured in 40% new oak, slightly less than the Saint-Pierre. It has a perfumed, floral nose with crushed violet infusing the black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous tannins that belie the structure underneath. With pure fruit and well-judged acidity, this 2022 is sensual with a persistent and lightly spiced finish. Superb.

Deep crimson. Elderberry, blackcurrant, hint cedar, aniseed aromas with hints of dark chocolate, fine bittersweet textures and fresh juicy acidity. Very good density and mineral torque. Elemental but well balanced wine. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot 40% new oak)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Gloria starts off with a quiet intensity of kirsch and fragrant soil scents, leading to a core of warm cassis, black raspberries, and Indian spices plus a hint of sandalwood. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with black and red berry flavors, supported by plush tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with an invigorating lift.

A gem in the vintage is going to be the 2022 Château Gloria, which comes from 50 hectares of vines and is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. Harvested between September 14 and 26, with yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare, it offers an inky purple hue to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy oak, and graphite. Hitting 13.8% alcohol and aging in 60% new French oak, it's a pure, layered, elegant yet concentrated Saint-Julien that readers will love. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Gloria is terrific. Bold and punchy, Gloria offers all of its typical charms but with an extra kick of fruit richness. Sumptuous red/purplish fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and rose petals are nicely dialed up in this super-expressive, delicious Saint-Julien. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2027-2047

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Gloria bursts with aromas of cherries, sweet berries, petals and spices, framed by a deft touch of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a succulent, enveloping core of fruit and supple tannins, it's a gourmand but nicely balanced Saint-Julien that will offer a broad drinking window.

Dark and spicy with a generous amount of gourmand fruit. Freshness for balance and fine but firm tannins providing persistence. Smooth texture. As is often the case, punches above its weight. (JL)
