Giscours - Margaux 2023

Château Giscours: A Unique Estate Surrounded by a Thriving and Pristine Ecosystem

Although the history of Château Giscours dates back to the 14th century, it truly began in 1552 with Pierre de Lhomme, who planted the first vines. In 1995, Eric Albada Jelgersma purchased the estate, restructured the vineyard, and renovated the buildings. Today, his children, supported by Alexander Van Beek, manage this 3rd Grand Cru Classé of Margaux.

Giscours stands out with its breathtaking grandeur. As a self-contained living entity, the estate offers an unparalleled experience within an unspoiled natural setting. Here, the harmony of the entire ecosystem contributes to its collective success. The 95 hectares of vineyards seamlessly integrate with their environment, nestled within a remarkable biodiversity reserve. The forest and park, meticulously designed in 1870 by the renowned landscaper Eugène Bühler, are teeming with an exceptional array of flora and fauna.

The wines crafted at Château Giscours reflect the essence of the place, its surroundings, and the dedicated individuals behind them. The Grand Vin bears a distinctive signature: a splendid equilibrium between aromatic brilliance and delicate tannins.

The 2023 vintage: the expression of an exceptional identity

Château Gsicours 2023 is a remarkable wine, beautifully balanced. Its stands out with a lovely combination of ripe black fruits, exceptional volume and energy, as well as a great fullness of tannis. The Cabernet Sauvignon once again proves to be the undisputed grape variety of this vintage, offering a magnificent length on the palate and a typically Giscours saline finish.  This constant quest for precision allows Giscours to transcend the demands of vintages such as 2023 and to maintain its exceptional identity year after year.

The 2023 Giscours demands coaxing on the nose. Tightly wound, blackberry, blueberry, violet and cedar develop in the glass, though it remains backward, suggesting cellaring is necessary. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins and a silver thread of acidity. The graphite element is a little more pronounced compared to its showing from barrel, nicely structured with a lively and quite spicy finish. After four to five years it should be ready to go but it should have the legs to offer 20-plus years' enjoyment. Tasted twice and oddly better at a tasting outside the château!

The purity of fruit is impressive. Aromas of blackberries, black currants, violets and a hint of stone follow through to a medium to full body, with integrated tannins that are solid and polished and a long finish. Sweet fruit at the with an intensity and richness. Chewy in a classic way from the grape tannins that give tannins. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot and 6% cabernet franc. Needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2028.

Deep purple-hued, the 2023 Château Giscours is beautifully done and brings a rare level of opulence while staying balanced and graceful. Cassis and more blue fruits, sappy flowers, violets, and minty herbs all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness as well as ripe, polished tannins. I love its mid-palate, and it has perfectly integrated acidity and one heck of a great finish. It's going to be a classic Margaux that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following two decades. The blend is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc.

Flowers, truffle, blackberries, black cherries, smoke, cigar box, and spice-filled aromatics open the wine. The wine offers a fresh, mineral-driven, multi-layered experience packed with layers of ripe, sweet, black cherries, and currants. The mid-palate and finish is silky, lifted, and ripe, with vibrancy, elegance, and purity from start to finish. The wine is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV, pH 3.75. Harvesting took place September 5 - October 6. Drink from 2028-2055. 93-95 Pts.

Inky, expertly constructed, fleshy blackberry, pomegranate and cassis fruits, black pepper, sage, rosemary and smoked cumin spice, with lift, nuance and momentum through the palate, clearly an excellent vintage at Giscours, although relatively low 31hl/ha yields.

The 2023 Giscours is the very best wine I have ever tasted here. Giscours has been knocking on the door of Bordeaux's elite for a few years now. Two thousand twenty-three is the year in which Giscours joins the region's big boys and girls. A towering, majestic Margaux, the 2023 dazzles from start to finish. What a wine!

The 2023 Giscours was picked between September 6 and October 6, a month-long harvest at an average of 31hL/ha, lower than usual due to the loss of Merlot. This has a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (71%). No sulfites were added until fermentation, and the élevage includes 50% new oak. This sample was taken from a foudre that represents a combination of barrels; I tasted it three times thereafter. It has a classically styled bouquet, less open and concentrated than the 2022, but well-defined with graphite-tinged black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright entry, a crisp line of acidity and fresh black fruit, with a noticeable marine/briny influence that guides the finish. This is not a powerful Giscours and doesn't quite have the persistence of the previous vintage, but I admire its linearity and classicism.

The 2023 Giscours is one of the real successes of the vintage, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and red fruits mingled with hints of undergrowth, violets and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, broad finish. It's a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.

This really expands in the mouth, with tight tannins that are polished and velvety. The fruit shows depth and purity. Medium to full body. Juicy center-palate. Like the ripe fruit in the center palate. The quality of the tannins in this rises to a new level. The tannins pull you through the wine. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc and the rest merlot.
