Giodo - La Quinta - Toscana IGT 2021

The history of Giodo in Montalcino begins in 2002, when Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s best-known winemakers identified his first hectare to purchase in the prestigious Brunello denomination. This first acquisition launched a new adventure and a fresh challenge, but one that was really the fulfilment of a long-held passion. Giodo name is a tribute to Carlo’s parents : Giovanna and Donatello. T

Today, the winery, lying midway between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, relies on 5.5 hectares of vineyard. Here Ferrini planted the Sangiovese clones he had found to be most convincing over the years. The original nucleus of vines is dedicated to the production of the Brunello di Montalcino (2.5ha) and the younger ones to “La Quinta”, the Toscana IGT (3ha).

La Quinta is aged 12 months in 700-litre oak casks but also in 2,500-litre tapered oak tanks and 2,700-litre “cocciopesto” amphorae.

Both labels depict a human icon and a circle, which is a representation of respectively the “Sangiovese” and the winegrowing world. On the Quinta’s label, the man is inside the circle because several grape varities, included Sangiovese, are authorized in the IGT Toscana denomination.

Lovely sweet berries and plums with some cherries. Pine tree and other forest characters. Medium to full body. Round tannins and fresh acidity. Tangy and vivid. 100% sangiovese. Delicious now but will age beautifully.

With Sangiovese picked from the estate's younger vines, the Giodo 2021 La Quinta is punchy and bright with cherry confit, raspberry syrup and tart aromas of blood orange or nectarine. The wine is easy-drinking in spirit with open fruit and a reassuringly transparent personality. The finish is lean and fresh. This is a production of 13,000 bottles.

Bright and lively on the palate, such beautifully expressed raspberry and red cherry fruit flavours alongside high-shining acidity that is so clean and precise. Joyful expression with hints of caramelised strawberries and fresh mint. So sharp but so well defined with a clarity to the palate that is gorgeous. Not totally complex but delivers a balanced, easy to enjoy wine with plenty of life. Ageing 12 months in 500l French oak barrels.
