The 2016 Fugue de Nenin is a blend of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, matured in 25% new oak and with 13.9% alcohol. It has a straightforward blackcurrant and raspberry scented bouquet, maybe a little disjointed at the moment, but it will meld together with time in barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, a splash of balsamic tincturing the tertiary red fruit with a savory finish. Drink over four or five years after bottling.

The 2016 Fugue de Nenin is soft, open-knit and gracious, all of which make it an attractive wine to drink in its youth. In 2016, the Cabernet Franc is quite a bit higher (21 percent) than it typically is, which seems to give the flavors lovely aromatic freshness and tension.

(70 Merlot, 21 Cabernet Franc) | 20% new oak | 13.9% alc. As in 2015 this is a highly engineered wine with great use of very serious raw materials and the results are plain to see. There is some precision here and it even has the edge on the wondrously juicy 2015. Unlike the 2015 this wine is not as overtly fruit-driven and explosive but more of a Vin de Garde. It therefore gains the same score. The reason that this and the 2015 are so sensational is that only 1/3 production was elevated to the Grand Vin, so there are many top flight parcels in this wine. 17.5+

79% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and only 25% new oak. They downgraded a 71-year-old, 2-ha plot of Cabernet Franc to Fugue in 2016. Pale rim and mid purplish crimson. Pure, direct, very fresh nose. Excellent nose but a tiny bit stringy on the end. A very good second wine but not a grand vin. Good persistence.

A full and juicy red with plums and dark berries plus hints of stones and minerals. Round and generous. Second wine of Nenin... and even better than the 2015!
