Arnaud Roux-Oulié, the artist winemaker behind Carlmagnus

Arnaud Roux-Oulié is the third generation of a family of winegrowers and was trained by his grandfather from his youth. When he took over the reins of the estate at the age of 20, he decided to buy 2 hectares in the Fronsac appellation. As a tribute to the glorious past of the appellation, and its close links with Charlemagne, he decided to call his new estate Carlmagnus. Dynamic and passionate, Arnaud Roux-Oulié bought Château Francs-Magnus in 2011, a wine estate in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation that benefits from a prestigious wine heritage.

The 10-hectare vineyard of Francs-Magnus enjoys a privileged location because it rests directly on a vast stone quarry, identical to those of the Saint-Emilion plateau, which was built to preserve the bottles. The limestone soil brings minerality and elegance to the wine.

Highly perfumed and aromatic on the nose, bright vivid purple colour in the glass. Fresh and bright purple fruits, blackcurrants and plums. Sweet, straight, highly charged in terms of fruit persistence, weight and fleshiness but with a linear, focused, cooling, chalky, creamy, powdery element as well as mineral touches. Supple, a bit gentle with bite and crunch. A touch austere and dry towards the end but more the youth speaking at this point. Nice promise and lovely graphite, minty fresh lift at the end. Good combination of fruit and terroir on show. Harvest 12 - 23 September. Ageing 16 months, 70% stainless steel tanks, 30% French oak barrels of one wine. In organic conversion.
