Forts de Latour (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pauillac 2020

AVAILABLE IN OWC 6, OWC 3 or OWC 1

Château Latour
, with origins dating back to 1331, is set in the heart of the Médoc, about 50 km northwest of Bordeaux—the birthplace of Bordeaux’s legendary vineyards.

Les Forts de Latour takes its name from a historic plot within the estate. The care devoted to this wine by our teams is the same as that given to the Grand Vin, reflecting a constant pursuit of quality since its creation in 1966. Its historic vineyards, Petit-Batailley and Saint-Anne, are located at the heart of the Pauillac Grand Cru Classé appellation. They are now complemented by the perimeter of the Enclos and by young plantings from this exceptional terroir overlooking the Gironde estuary. This ensemble is further enhanced by a highly qualitative 7-hectare plot situated on gravel terraces in the commune of Artigues. The specific characteristics of its original vineyard require careful management of new oak during aging—around 60%—to preserve finesse and elegance while developing the rounding of its tannins.

The 2020 vintage:

The 2020 vintage, marked by 53 consecutive days with almost no rain between June and July, framed by significant rainfall in spring and August, allowed the production of exceptionally high-quality juice. Perfectly balanced between power and freshness, it stands among the great successes of the decade.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is superb. Hints of gravel, dried herbs, game and licorice weave through a core of dark red/purplish fruit. Spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco follow. The purity of the flavors is just striking. Initially a touch reticent, the 2020 fleshes out beautifully with a bit of air. I would give this at least another year or two in bottle. A magnificent Forts de Latour.

Dark fruits on the nose with purple violet floral reflections, milk chocolate and cocoa touches give hints of savoury complexity on the nose. Pumped, alive and round, this is full in the mouth, supple but with high acidity. Round and textured in the mouth with powdery, crushed velvet tannins giving the depth and width. Round, bright, vivacious, plump and juicy. Joyful but still cool and fresh with salty stone elements, blue fruits as well as plums and blackcurrants with cola touches. I really like this, feels really well worked, very complete, lively, energetic, and detailed. 3.7pH

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Merlot, and 3.5% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Les Forts de Latour is deep garnet-purple colored. The nose is very closed to begin, slowly offering glimpses at crushed blackberries, mulberries, and cassis notes, followed by hints of aniseed, black truffles, and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound with loads of vibrant black fruit and earthy layers and a firm, grainy backbone, finishing long with a compelling lift.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour has a fresh, delineated, precise and focused bouquet of graphite-infused black fruit. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, fine depth and ample grip. This builds momentum toward a structured finish, with a dash of spice lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Merlot and 3.5% Petit Verdot, incorporating a 64-hectoliter tank of Merlot that would normally have been included in the Grand Vin but which didn't fit with this year's blend. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, plums, licorice, pipe tobacco and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with terrific depth at the core and a somewhat more textural, granular profile than the suave 2019.

Blue fruits and lead pencil come through here. Medium to full body. Firm and silky tannins and a crisp and citrusy finish. Nice zest. Floral and fruity. Al dente fruit. Needs four or five years to show its excellence. Try after 2028.

The 2020 Les Forts De Latour brings everything up a substantial notch, offering medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, liquid violets, and spring flower notes. It shows the fresher, pure, focused style of the vintage, has an incredible floral character, ripe, fine tannins, and great finish. Give it 4-5 years at a minimum, and I suspect it's capable of evolving for decades.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour has a marvelous bouquet with fine delineation, lively and vibrant. The marine/crustacea aspect here is more prominent than its showing from barrel. Several swirls later and a lovely graphite element pins down its birthplace. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, ever so slightly candied in style, perhaps with a touch more red fruit than recent vintages, blood orange and pencil box. It fans out beautifully on the finish - a really quite gorgeous Les Forts de Latour in the making.

More depth and darker fruit, graphite, mild toast, mocha, pure cassis, cherry and stone flavours with a wealth of polished tannin, ample and mouth filling without opulence and a very nice length, linear and pure.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is much more contained and focused compared directly with the Pauillac de Latour, extraordinarily pure with blackberry, raspberry, cedar and violet scents, again, a touch of liquorice in the background. The palate is medium-bodied. Very fine tannins frame the silky black and blueberry fruit that merges into classic cedar and graphite notes towards the finish. Awesome. Deuxième only in name.

A fresh lilt to the grippy tannins, and the overall feel is elegant, balanced, classical and enjoyably savoury, with the spicy black pepper and grilled rosemary notes that come from the overall concentration and intensity of the vintage. An excellent Forts de Latour, but not an exuberant one. 5.1% press, 44% of overall production.
