Forts de Latour (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pauillac 2019

Château Latour, with origins dating back to 1331, is set in the heart of the Médoc, about 50 km northwest of Bordeaux—the birthplace of Bordeaux’s legendary vineyards. Les Forts de Latour is sourced from three distinct areas, including part of the Enclos. The wine takes its name from a historic parcel within the Enclos. Since it was first bottled under this name in 1966, relentless dedication to quality has placed it among the finest classified growths of the Médoc. From vineyard to cellar, Les Forts de Latour is crafted with the same meticulous care as the Grand Vin. The only key difference, aside from its origins, is the proportion of new oak barrels used for ageing—between 50% and 60%.

The 2019 vintage

2019 is characterised by its harmony and balance. A cool wet spring followed by a warm and dry summer created the right conditions for a generous crop of exceptional quality. After a mild and wet autumn, January 2019 was wet (117mm) and quite cold. The second half of February was much warmer, and this encouraged an early yet even bud break. Early June was cool and rainy. However, the weekend from 30th May to 2nd June was exceptionally fine and hot so the flowering went well. Hot and dry weather then set in from mid-June and continuedthroughout the summer. 27mm of rain in just 4 days at the end of July gave the vines some respite and kick-started the colour-change, which was registered on 6th August. Thanks to these favourable conditions which lasted until midSeptember, the berries ripened in the best possible manner and the grapes remained healthy right up to harvest.

Tasting notes:

Intense violet hue. A plethora of black fruits on the nose such as pure cassis, damson and crunchy black cherry. A touch of cedarwood, smoke and tobacco complete this highly complex wine. Whilst very charming and supple, it has a fine tannic backbone and a sappy freshness. The finale is very harmonious and long.

Inky, great depths with a vivid violet rim, this is exceptional, balanced and full of character. Coming out of its serious early years, showing fleshy plum, damson and cassis fruits, along with graphite, slate, fennel and toast. If you like your wines particuarly powerful, you can go for it now and over the next few years, but it will age for a good few decades from here. Chiselled, very much speaking of its Pauillac heritage.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour has an open nose, strangely perhaps a little more expressive than the 2020 Pauillac de Latour at the moment. Scents of blackberry, cassis and iris flower unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crushed stone infusing the black fruit. This has attained more linearity since I encountered it in January 2023.

A captivating nose of milk chocolate, cola, cherries, and violets, offering a soft and inviting bouquet. The palate is fully textured, opening gradually to coat the cheeks and tongue in a fine layer of chalky tannins. Juicy and succulent through the mid-palate, it bursts with citrus zest, orange and lemon pith, cranberries, and red cherries. There’s a beautiful interplay of bite and tension, with a sapdi freshness and a mineral core of crushed stones and iron. The finish ends bright, minty, and herbal, delivering great drive and persistence. 3.60pH. Click to see full details

Exquisite aromas of lavender, cigar ash and Spanish cedar with dried citrus follow through to a medium body and a solid palate with powerful, ultrafine and linear tannins. The muscle and long finish are so beautiful. Give it two or three years but already a solid wine. Drink after 2028.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour opens in the glass with aromas of cassis, wild berries, sweet spices, cigar wrapper and a deft application of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it’s a deep, muscular wine with rich tannins, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. As readers will know, it mostly derives from dedicated parcels located further inland from Latour's famous "Enclos," next to Château Haut-Batailley. It's a fabulous effort that would clearly merit classified growth status in its own right were the 1855 classification ever to be revised. 94+

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour is a powerhouse. Dark and ample in the glass, the Forts de Latour shows all of its natural breadth in 2019, but amplified to a considerable degree. The 2019 is an especially somber Forts endowed with tons of richness as well as structure. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, chocolate and licorice build into the substantial finish. The 2019 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine.
