Fontenil - Fronsac 2021

Dany and Michel Rolland, heirs to a strong winemaking tradition and oenologists from the University of Bordeaux, are well acquainted with the Fronsac appellation. After having been consultants for numerous estates, they had the desire to produce wine and establish themselves there. In 1986, they purchased a few hectares in the commune of Saillans, overlooking the Isle and Libourne, in a magnificent setting on a south-facing slope: Château Fontenil was born.

Located on the slopes of a south-facing hill, overlooking Libourne and the magnificent Isle Valley, the 9-hectare vineyard extends over clay-limestone soils on Fronsadais molasses.

The 2021 Fontenil has real presence and character. Crushed flowers, spice, blue fruits, lavender and mint open first. Medium in body, with fine balance, the Fontenil is quite pretty in 2021. Naturally, it's a restrained wine with less textural richness than the best years, yet all the elements are impeccably balanced.

This is showing notes of mushrooms, orange zest, dried herbs, anise and currants. It’s juicy and medium-bodied, with a delicious balance of fruit and subtle woody spice on the palate framed by fine tannins. Moreish. Drink from 2024.

Blackberry and orange peel. Medium body with fine tannins that integrate nicely into the wine and provide finesse and energy.

The 2021 Château Fontenil should be outstanding, with a beautiful bouquet of ripe darker cherry and cassis, followed by some background floral and violet notes. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has supple tannins, a round, delicious profile, and outstanding length.

Distingué, floral et épicé, ce vin est bien dans le millésime, son attaque suave se poursuit dans une bouche qui a juste ce qu’il faut de concentration par rapport à son fruit et surtout une belle longueur.

On the first sniff, you will be charmed immediately by Fonteni’s profound and pure aromas of jujube candy. The fruity fragrance shows a good level of ripeness, so much so that no single trace of the cool vintage is found. The acidity and tannins are quite pronounced, though with a bit astringent in the finish. Fortunately, the smooth structure and gentle texture on the palate vouch for a good balance of the body. ????,?????Fontenil??????????????,?????????,??????????????????????,?????????????????????????????????????????

Salty, mineral-edged plums, soft, round tannins and a blast of spicy cherries along with a touch of refreshing mint-leaf on the mid-palate that you also find nuances of in the finish. You can enjoy this on release for its fruit and freshness. Drink from 2023-2032. 91-93

The 2021 Fontenil lacks a bit of complexity on the nose compared to recent vintages and just seems unable to get out of the block. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a bit rustic, though there a pleasant spiciness comes through on the finish. This needs to cohere during its barrel maturation and it may well do so. Hopefully the aromatics will get their act together.

The 2021 Fontenil is a bright, punchy wine. Vibrant acids and sweet, lifted aromatics are some of the signatures. In 2021, Fontenil isn't as overt or rich as it can be, but that's hardly an issue. I have to say, I very much like this more nuanced, energetic style.

Leuchtendes Rubin.

The 2021 Fontenil shows promise, offering up aromas of rich berry fruit, loamy soil, warm spices and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, generously extracted palate that's built around plenty of powdery tannin and a tangy spine of acidity. This is a strong effort that will delight admirers of the Rolland style, even in this cooler vintage.

Dried herbs, dried flowers, eucalyptus and black cherries on the nose - such aromatic complexity and a marker of a year where grapes slowly ripened to full maturity. Smooth and round, yet also softly chewy and mouthfilling with a sense of forward motion and drive. There is power here, but it's not weighty, rather the freshness and high acid is to the fore giving brightness and vivacity with touches of bramble, clove and cedar on the finish. Pure stone and saltiness on the finish which brings you to the terroir. Such a long finish with lingering aromas of perfumed cherries. A great effort this year. Michel Rolland consultancy.
