Fombrauge - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2019

"Fons Brogiera: a spring surrounded by heather”. This was the first mention of the name Fombrauge which, for 6 centuries now, has epitomised the elegance of the Grand Cru Classé wines of Saint Emilion. From the Canolle family in the 15th century to Bernard Magrez today, six families have succeeded each other in owning and running Château Fombrauge.

Its vineyard is distinguished first by its size (58.60 hectares), and then by its diversity of soils as well as exposures that give Fombrauge wine its complexity and identity.

To ensure the full expression of the estate’s rich terroir, Bernard Magrez, the owner since 1999, today combines ancestral savoir-faire with precision viticulture.

It is a very explosive wine, especially the toasted aroma from oak barrels. You'll feel a fullness of roundness, dense tannins and a mellow body the moment the wine flows through the palate, but at the same time maintain a balanced taste. For people who like full-bodied wines, this wine can always bring you a good sense of satisfaction. ?????????,??????????????????????????????????,????????????,????????????????????????????????,????????????????

Perfumed nose of dried flowers, sandalwood, pine cones, currants, cassis, cloves, walnuts and spiced plums. It’s medium-to full-bodied with polished, ripe and creamy tannins. Plush and velvety with a supple, fresh finish. Drink from 2024.

The 2019 Château Fombrauge is terrific and has a good mix of richness, concentration, and elegance. Giving up notes of mulled ripe cherries, Asian spices, blackberries, tobacco, and cedar pencil on the nose, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered, pure mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and just beautiful overall balance. It's already drinking beautifully today yet will evolve positively for 5-7 years and hold for another 15-20 years. It's another brilliant Saint-Emilion in the vintage. This seemed more modern and polished from barrel but shows a very classic style now from bottle.

The 2019 Fombrauge exhibits rich aromas of cherries, dark chocolate, plum preserve, licorice and new oak, followed by a full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's soft and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit, ripe acids and rich, powdery tannins. This is a generous, front-loaded Saint-Émilion from Bernard Magrez.

The 2019 Fombrauge is one of the best wines I have tasted from this property in some time. It shows all the richness that is typical of Bernard Magrez's style but with less heaviness and a good deal of aromatic presence that helps balance things out. Sweet dark cherry, chocolate, leather, licorice and mocha build into the resonant, super-expressive finish. The 2019 is a classy Fombrauge.

The 2019 Fombrauge, which was bottled in spring 2021, retains the opulence that I found from barrel, still showing that heady mixture of blackberry, blueberry and a touch of cooked meat, if perhaps just requiring a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and generous, with succulent ripe tannins, a satiny texture and a gossamer finish that slips down the throat. Afford it 5–6 years and this should evolve into a lovely Saint-Émilion.

Falling under the Bernard Magrez umbrella, the 2019 Château Fombrauge is another sweetly fruited, sexy Saint-Emilion with loads of black fruits, tobacco leaf, graphite, chocolate, and violet aromas and flavors. It packs tons of fruit on the palate as well as no hard edges, remarkable purity of fruit, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's certainly not for the old-school Claret-only lovers out there, but it’s a pleasure-bent, gorgeous wine I'd be happy to drink. It should shine right out of the gate and keep for two decades. Tasted twice.

The 2019 Fombrauge has a delightful, very pure and opulent bouquet with vivid blackberries, blueberry and vanilla. The oak is nicely assimilated. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe tannins, well judged acidity and a lightly spiced finish that lingers with just a dab of salted liquorice. This is showing a great deal of promise.

Dark in color with a blast of licorice, forest leaf, herbs, espresso and plums get you going. Rich, round, fruity, with layers of ripe, lusciously textured dark plums, licorice and smoke, all topped off with cocoa, the wine was made from blending 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. 90-92 Pts

This is really juicy and delicious with dark berries and hints of chocolate and hazelnuts. It's medium-to full-bodied with silky tannins and a fresh finish. I like the reserved nature of this. Holding back.
