Fleur Petrus - Pomerol 2023

Perfumed and refined, the 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus has turned out very well, offering aromas of rose petals, dark berries, plums and incense, with new oak rendered almost imperceptible. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep, it is layered, built around a concentrated core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a long, penetrating, mineral finish. The blend comprises 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, matured in 50% new oak.

Impressive, carefully constructed a slow unfoll, full of Pomerol texture and flesh, concentrated roasted coffee bean, and incense, expands through the palate, oyster shell salinity on the finish alongside dark cassis fruits and lifted tannic frame. 50% new oak for ageing. Harvest September 7 to 19.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus strolls out of the glass with confidently classic notes of ripe plums, boysenberries, and pencil shavings, followed by nuances of lilacs, iron ore, and tapenade. The medium- to full-bodied palate is tight-knit and lively, with firm, fine-grained tannins and a lingering ferrous finish. The blend is 96.5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Petit Verdot.

Sporting a vivid purple hue, the 2023 Château La Fleur-Petrus reveals terrific aromatics of ripe red and black fruits, black cherries, graphite, dried herbs, and loamy soil, as well as loads of baking spices. Based on 97% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot and aged 16-18 months in 50% new French oak, it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, plenty of ripe tannins, and outstanding length. As it sits in the glass, it picks up more of that classic La Fleur-Petrus complexity and nuance. Hide this for 5-7 years and it will keep for 20-25 years with ease. Drink 2031-2053.

Nobody knows the truffles I've seen, but they certainly know the truffle aromatics I've smelled with just a swirl, and sniff here. Once past the royal fungus, elements of flowers, cherries, black raspberries, and espresso, cherries, and licorice are apparent in the aromatic profile. On the palate, this is sensuous, vibrant, and fresh, with notes of chocolate-covered black cherries, mint, espresso, and plums. Long, intense, refined, and almost bright, in the finish, you can enjoy this with pleasure with only a few years in the cellar. But give it a decade, and this is going to offer incredible drinking. The wine blends 96.5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and .05 Petit Verdot. Drink from 2029-2055.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus is impeccable. Delicate yet pliant, La Fleur-Pétrus captures the duality of the vintage. Soft contours envelop dark red plum, cedar, pipe tobacco, dried herbs and incense. The 2023 opens beautifully with a bit of time in the glass. I suspect it will do very much the same over the next few years in bottle. This is such a classy, polished Pomerol.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus has a refined bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry, black truffle and light leather scents that gradually unfold on the nose. Quite classical in style, though I am just seeking a bit more ambition. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, good mid-weight body and fine grip. There is something slightly Oriental in style toward the finish that shows a touch more vivacity than the Hosanna this year. It stays within its lane, but it is the right lane to be in.

Blackberries, black truffles and hints of cedar, bark and graphite on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with creamy, polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. This is tight and well formed, with poised strength. Give it until 2030 to show its magic.

The 2023 Château La Fleur-Pétrus comes from roughly 19 hectares of deeper, gravelly, clay soils located on the upper plateau of Pomerol. Almost all Merlot (there's 3% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot), its ruby/purple hue is followed by a medium to full-bodied, round, concentrated Pomerol that has the vintage’s pure red and black fruits as well as some spicy, floral nuances. It's impeccably balanced and has ripe, polished, yet building tannins and a great finish. It has the château's overall elegant, silky style front and center yet this brings ample depth and richness.

Flowers, spice, black raspberries, espresso, cherries, and licorice are abundant in the aromatic profile. On the palate, this is sensuous, silky, and sexy. It is polished, rich, and velvety, with layers of dark chocolate-covered black cherries, mint, spice, licorice, smoke, espresso, and plums. This is long, as well as intense, with energy, and complexity. You can enjoy this with pleasure with only a few years in the cellar. But give it a decade, and this is going to offer incredible drinking. The wine blends 96.5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and .05 Petit Verdot. The harvest took place September 7 - September 19. Drink from 2029-2050. 96-98 Pts.

Vibrant plum colour, richly textured from the first moments, bringing you squarely into Pomerol. Intense concentrated espresso and liqourice, the construction is expertly done, with lifted architecture, confident tannins and lift on the finish, turning on the pleasure factor as it opens in the glass. Harvest September 7 to 19.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus is fabulous. Increasingly, I find it one the most complete Pomerols in the Moueix range. Perhaps, that’s because it comes from numerous parcels throughout the appellation and is therefore a wine that greatly benefits from blending. Bright acids and floral top notes add lift to a core of red-toned fruit. Hints of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, mint and orange peel linger on the beautifully persistent finish.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus was picked September 7 to 19. Now, this is a level up from the Hosanna, with greater precision and focus—very pure and more terroir-driven. The palate is sleek and smooth on the entry, with svelte tannins, a perfect line of acidity and a very harmonious finish that fans out nicely. This is a refined La Fleur-Pétrus that should age well in bottle.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the edge. Delicate notes of orange blossom, dark forest berries, fresh cherries, subtle hints of cassis and liquorice, multi-faceted bouquet. Complex, tight-knit, juicy and elegant, fine, firm tannins, mineral, subtle savouriness in the finish, shows length and certain ageing potential.

The 2023 La Fleur-Pétrus is very attractive, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, sweet cherries and plums mingled with hints of incense and spices, discreetly framed by new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and textural, its rich core of fruit framed by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin.

Very tight for this chateau, with blackberry, chocolate and black-cherry character, as well as a hint of smoky oak. Full and very poised with focus and beauty. 96.5% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 0.5% cabernet sauvignon.
