Ferrière - Margaux 2012

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a story of passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton are among those people who are driven by their passion. They both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. These two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates in the early 90's: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry.
Claire and Gonzague, faithful to their deepest values, always search new practices that are adopted to their soils and allow them to reveal the terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce fines wines that matter.

Château Ferrière, a unique heritage in Margaux

The Merlaut family bought Château Ferrière with the ambition of restoring its former glory, which had led it to its status as 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1992, after the death of her mother Bernadette, Claire took over the management of the estate and has devoted herself to restoring Château Ferrière's prestige.

Its 24-hectare vineyard is located 95% on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation. It is a unique heritage of massal diversity as a third of the vines that makes up the vineyard dates from the 1950s. Certified in Organic Agriculture in 2015, Château Ferrière is the first Grand Cru Classé of Margaux to be dualy certified in Biodynamics in 2018 by Demeter & Biodyvin.

Tasted blind at the Southward 2012 tasting, the 2012 Ferrière came across as a little green on the nose, pinched at first and never really mustering requisite fruit intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with "stringy" tannins, earthy red fruit and a slightly attenuated finish. I harbored modest expectations from this Ferrière out of barrel, but on this occasion I felt it just lacked a bit of vigor. Tasted January 2016.

A wine that is young and bright with currant and berry character. Hints of minerals too. Opens in the glass. Polished and gorgeous. Drink now or hold.

Deep crimson. Coffee, dustiness and cassis-leaf aromas. Lots of capsicum. Lacks ripe fruit on the palate, though there is some sweetness so the tannins are a bit dry on the finish. (JH)13% Drink 2018-2026

(62% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 43 h/h yield): Medium-deep red.  Bright aromas of red berries, tobacco and flowers.  Sweet, silky and rather small-scaled, but with very good balance to the sappy red fruit and tobacco flavors.  Finishes easygoing and uncomplicated, with decent length and a complete absence of rough edges.  Ferrière may never be the last word in concentration or complexity,  but owner Claire Lurton is amazingly adept at fashioning a charming, easy-to-drink wine from this estate virtually every year.

Fruits noirs, mûre, bouche tendue, vive, bien fruitée, le fruit est motivé par l'acidité. Délicat, assez fin et dense. O= 2017 G= 13 ans.

Elegant, perfumed with nice aromatics but weak mid palate and finish. Simple, lean flavours with tannins that are light and soft. Enjoy young.

Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc picked from 1 until 10 October, the Ferriere has a light earthy bouquet that needs to muster more vigour once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and pretty, light redcurrant and strawberry fruit that lead to an almost Burgundy-like fleshy finish. This may merit a higher score after bottling. Tasted April 2013.

On the tangy side now, with pomegranate, bergamot, red currant and cherry fruit wrapped in briary tannins. A bit chewy on the finish, but displaying good purity and density. —J.M.

Dense colour, good solid extraction of fruit, more robust than in the past, a bit raw now, but good future. 16.75/20pts ( 89/100pts)Drink: 2017 - 2028

La couleur est sombre et le nez discret. Bouche discrète et aussi fruitée, aromatique, au corps et à la longueur moyens.

Drink 2020-2030Dark and lustrous. Very headily scented. Then dry oak. Disjointed at present. Very green finish. Raw fruit. Shame because it starts so well…

Lots of finesse to this wine in the vintage with blueberry, mineral and floral character. Full body, with integrated tannins and a fresh finish. Perhaps better than 2011.
