Ferrière (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2023

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates: A Story of Passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton, from the renowned Bordeaux winemaking families Merlaut and Lurton, took over their family estates in the 1990s: Château Durfort-Vivens (2nd Growth in Margaux), Château Ferrière (3rd Growth in Margaux), Château Haut-Bages Libéral (5th Growth in Pauillac), and Château La Gurgue (Margaux).

Pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics, agroecology, and agroforestry, they constantly seek new practices to reveal their terroir and produce exceptional wines.

Château Ferrière, a unique heritage in Margaux

The Merlaut family bought Château Ferrière with the ambition of restoring its former glory, which had led it to its status as 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1992, after the death of her mother Bernadette, Claire took over the management of the estate and has devoted herself to restoring Château Ferrière's prestige.

Its 24-hectare vineyard is located 95% on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation. It is a unique heritage of massal diversity as a third of the vines that makes up the vineyard dates from the 1950s. Certified in Organic Agriculture in 2015, Château Ferrière is the first Grand Cru Classé of Margaux to be dualy certified in Biodynamics in 2018 by Demeter & Biodyvin.

The 2023 vintage

In 2023, the weather in the Médoc was favorable, promoting regular and uninterrupted vegetative growth. Spring weather conditions and moderate rainfall were beneficial, ensuring good production potential until harvest. Despite a hot and dry summer, ripeness levels reached interesting levels thanks to a particularly warm end of August. September rains provided relief to the Cabernet Sauvignon towards the end of the harvest, giving them freshness again.

The 2023 Ferrière has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, wild hedgerow and light iris flower scents that is nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, touches of black tea infusing the black fruit, with a healthy pinch of black pepper on the finish. This is worth seeking out.

Checking in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, raised in 40% new oak, the 2023 Château Ferriere is beautiful, with juicy red (and some blue) fruits as well as classic Margaux notes of spice, flowers, and leather. It's complex and medium-bodied, with a supple, layered, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish.

This is one of the best Ferrieres for years, with waves of blackberry, cassis, fennel, anis, liqourice root, all sweet and pure and intense, with velvety tannins. Great stuff. 40hl/h yield, 3.79ph, harvest Septemboer 13 to october 2, highest yields for for 12 years, 40% new oak for ageing overall, along with concrete eggs, touch of amphoras.

The 2023 Ferrière is a hugely promising wine. At this early stage, 2023 looks like a wine of notable refinement. Ferrière is typically a big Margaux with large-grained tannins, but that is not the case at all with 2023. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol abound. Claire Lurton likes to present this wine from tank, before the wine is put into wood, in order to show the quality of the fruit. For that reason, the en primeur sample is really just a snapshot.

The 2023 Ferrière was picked at 40hL/ha between September 13 and October 2 and matured in 40% new oak. It has a very precise bouquet, understated in style, with blackberry and bilberry fruit laced with cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp black fruit on the entry, quite spicy and peppery in style. It’s a more vivacious Ferrière compared to other vintages, closing with a smooth and harmonious finish. This is a lovely Margaux from Claire Lurton.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. A hint of clove, black cherry, delicate hints of cranberry, a hint of orange zest. Taut, tightly woven, red berry texture, ripe, firm tannins, fine cassis touch on the finish, mineral aftertaste.

The 2023 Ferrière is a strong effort, bursting with aromas of dark berries, spices and boot polish, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate with a broad attack, good depth at the core and sweet structuring tannins. It's a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot and a touch of Cabernet Franc.

Very pure fruit here, showing blackberries and black cherries, as well as hints of walnuts. Medium body. The tannins are fine-grained and well integrated. I like the concentration on the center-palate and the freshness on the finish. It’s structured and long, with lively fruit and a hint of salt at the end. Minerally. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 3.5% petit verdot and 0.5% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
