Favia, Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley 2019

Favia Winery was founded in 2001 as a collaboration between Viticulturist Annie Favia and Winemaker Andy Erickson. Based in Coombsville, Napa Valley, California, their philosophy is simple: create soulful wines that express the true nature of the vineyards from which they come. The wines focus on two cultivars that thrive in the Napa Valley:  Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

These chosen vineyard sites represent the most compelling soils and aspects of Coombsville and have a rich story to tell. The team uses keen eyes, sharp ears, organic and mindful farming practices, where the smallest details make the difference. In the winery, gentle handling, minimal intervention, and strict monitoring of the wine make it possible for the beauty of the Napa Valley terroir to show in the wines.

Their pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville represents their best expression of the historic, however newly ascendant, appellation in the southeast corner of the Napa Valley.

Favia's team has been working with vineyards in this area for more than fifteen years.  Its gravelly, volcanic soils and proximity to San Pablo Bay combine to lend the wines an old-world quality, delivered at an impressive level of concentration and depth.

2019 vintage

The 2019 offering of this noble variety is deeply colored, with a black-purple hue and remarkable opacity. The aromas are highly perfumed, with an intense, dark profile. The typical black fruits are there but layered under a blanket of umami notes—morels, roasted meat, exotic wood and dark chocolate. The weight is massive, but with amazing balance and grace. The wine has a velvety texture, with cocoa powder tannins and an expansive, lengthy finish. The wine is well structured and dense, and will certainly age for many years to come.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is deep garnet-purple in color. After a swirl or two, it bursts from the glass with flamboyant notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie, and juicy plums leading to hints of star anise, cinnamon stick, lilacs, and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate offers surprising elegance, with fine-knit black fruit and spice layers framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length.

Pure and focused, with a beam of cassis, red cherry and damson plum driving through, flanked with violet and anise and supported by a sleek, iron-tinged spine. This has a great encore of fruit, with subtle mint and loam echoes at the very end. Best from 2023 through 2038. 359 cases made.

Wonderful aromas of blue fruit, black olives and violets. Lead pencil throughout. Crushed stones, too. Hints of mint and seaweed. Full-bodied with tannins that spread across the palate. It starts off with a bang, with tannins that take you deep into the wine. It’s endless on the finish. It goes on for minutes. Velvet and polished texture. Better after 2026.

Stepping back from a more obvious, warmer, plusher stance, this cooler site results in an edgier, fresher wine with spice and herb notes. It is a welcome break from the exuberant Cali-reds, and while the oak is proud and central in this wine’s construction, the fruit manages to cloak this core with wistful, sonorous flavours.

Vendanges 3 octobre 2019.

A new addition to the Place de Bordeaux this year - the eponymous project of husband and wife duo; viticulturist Annie Favia and winemaker Andy Erickson. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville reflecting the gravelly, volcanic terroir and proximity to San Pablo Bay with a minimal interventionist practise. Powerful and expressive nose, extremely aromatic, but feels direct and quite detailed. Juicy and alive, you feel the life pulsing through this wine, it's got depth of flavour but the texture is light graceful piercing almost with a sharp crisp tang that is so thrilling. The acidity is there giving life and joy to the blackcurrant and berry fruits and this has such detail and nuance in the savoury earthy edges; smoked meats, liquorice, dark chocolate dusting, iodine-soy saltiness, strawberry tang and long finish. Well structured, with balance and elegance and lovely details throughout. So much character here.

From Coombsville, one of the fresher areas of Napa, with fog influence, packed full of black fruits, more punchy and concentrated than the Cerro Sur from the same estate. Expect dark fruits and layers of liqourice and graphite, together with a restrained and slighly chalky feel to the tannins. Grippy, freshly-grated slate texture with a refreshing hit on the finish, hangs on in there delivering waves of flavour. This will age for a good decade or more. Harvest September 30 to October 7, 50% new oak. Natural yeasts, low intervention, no filtering or fining. Owners, viticulturalists and winemakers Annie Favia and Andy Erickson. Tasted twice.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is a blend mostly from Meteor. A stunning wine, the 2019 possesses off the charts richness and tremendous depth that just builds with time in the glass. Inky dark fruit, plum, spice, licorice, menthol and crushed berries saturate the palate. The 2019 is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Andy Erickson and Annie Favia. Don't miss it.
