Favia, Cerro Sur - Napa Valley 2014

Favia Winery was founded in 2001 as a partnership between Annie Favia and her husband Andy Erickson. Annie is a passionate viticulturist and a true nature lover whereas Andy is a highly regarded winemaker in Napa who serves as a consultant for prominent wineries including Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Harlan, and Staglin, among others. Located in Coombsville, Napa Valley, their philosophy is straightforward: crafting soulful wines that genuinely reflect the unique character of the vineyards they originate from.

Rancho Chimiles, the classic California ranch high in the mountains east of Coombsville, is the home of the Cabernet Franc at the core of our perennially impressive blended red wine, Cerro Sur. These old vines, in this very special terroir, produce a wine of singular character, aromatic enthusiasm, and fresh, focused flavors. After careful sorting, the grapes are carefully monitored through fermentation and maceration, giving the wine a fine and a narrow focus. This is followed by 22 months of aging in 50% new French oak barrels, and bottling without fining or filtration, giving the wine a depth and generosity that is incredibly appealing and age worthy.

The 2014 vintage

Weather conditions

2014 was a compelling season, with drought conditions but fairly mild temperatures, leading to wines with great intensity, vibrancy, and persistence. While total rainfall for the season was near normal, the bulk of this precipitation came in the winter months of December through February, with almost no rain in the spring. This meant the soils were not fully charged when the season began, which led to low to medium vigor in the vines.
A dry, mild summer meant that stress levels in the vineyard remained moderate. The cool temperatures persisted into the fall, which gave an extended season.

Wines from 2014 were restrained, and certainly not showy, in their youth. They have aged very well, and nearly a decade in are open and expressive, and still with the balance and grace of the vintage

Tasting notes

The driving force of the 2014 vintage is the combination of density, freshness, and balance. The most recent offering of Cerro Sur shows lively energy and notes of bing cherry, plum clafoutis, black tea and orange oil. The generosity of the wine is persistent; deeply layered, it opens to flavors of cinnamon, lavender, cocoa, cardamom, and candied ginger. This flavor intensity carries through on the finish. A complex wine with a long life ahead of it.

This is expressive, elegant and yet quite delicate too. Despite the rather higher proportion of Cabernet Franc, this has almost something of a warm vintage Pomerol character to it. Rose petals, lilac, wilted blackberry and blueberry, tobacco leaf, a hint of chanterelles mushroom, white truffle and the dusty leather armchair in the corner of the staffroom. Cool and refined on the palate, with soft and gentle tannins and a voluptuous mouthfeel. This is absolutely ready to be drunk and rather lovely.

Gorgeous nose full of bright cherry and plum with honeycomb and toffee apple edges - so enticing. Delicious and filling, really envelops the entire mouth with tannins that are on the prominent, full, ample and massy side with a powdery, chalky and soft fleshines that is so welcome and appealing. Feels like it's softening and expanding nicely, becoming more confident in the glass, still with power and concentration, but the juicy acidity shines through giving such a charming character. Structured and expressive, this is perfect to have with food and such a treat to taste a Napa with some age full of soft florality, subtle cinnamon, clove and ginger spice and espresso accents. In a great drinking period but there's still lots of life yet no doubt. Generous, balanced and so satisfying with a lovely texture and overall length. Ageing 22 months French oak, 50% new. Grapes come from a mountain top block of Cabernet Franc planted nearly 40 years ago on the Rancho Chimiles, high in the Vaca mountains.

The 2014 Cerro Sur, 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-brick in color. Notes of redcurrant preserves, blackberry pie, and plum pudding jump from the glass, with hints of iron ore, tilled soil, and wild sage plus a waft of cigar box. The full-bodied palate is mature yet still possesses plenty of energetic black fruits, with a firm, grainy texture and seamless acidity, finishing long and ferrous.

A library release for this superb wine, approaching 10 years old and a wonderful time to drink. Softened by waves of tobacco, cocoa bean and truffle, melted into plump blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, still showcasing energy and clarity of intent. Love the nuance and drawn out concentration. Great stuff from Andy and Annie Erickson, shining a light on one of the most interesting corners of Napa with the precison of their winemaking, from a vintage that was dry but not overly hot, harvesting the 40 year old Cabernet Franc vines well into October. 50% new French oak barrels, bottled unfiltered and unfined.

A rich, robust style that balances intensity with refinement, driven by a core of dark berry, savory herb, underbrush, gravelly earth and licorice flavors. Ends as it starts, full-bodied and persistent. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2020 through 2032. 475 cases made.

This is a layered and rich cabernet franc with a chocolate, walnut and currant character. Full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Focused and very pretty. Broad textured tannins. Subtle yet flavorful finish. Mostly cabernet franc with some cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

The 2014 Cerro Sur is gorgeous. Fresh, vibrant and beautifully delineated, the 2014 speaks to energy above all else. Floral notes from the Cabernet Franc give the wine its aromatic intensity and lift, but at the same time, the wine is weightless, precise and lifted. The 2014 could use another few years in bottle. Today, it is brisk and finely cut, not to mention striking in its beauty.

The 2014 Cerro Sur is 83% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. It exhibits good structure, lots of oak, plenty of tannin, and is a bigger, beefier version of a Cabernet Franc-dominated wine than its sibling, La Magdalena. This wine begs for another 2-3 years of bottle age, when it should open up and display more nuances. The color is a dense ruby/purple, the fruit pure and rich, with blueberry and black raspberry infused with flowery notes and forest floor. This medium to full-bodied wine should be at its best in 3-4 years and keep for 20 or more.
