Faugères - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Silvio Denz Vineyards

The estate of Vignobles Silvio Denz in Saint-Emilion and in Sauternes share the passion that drives their owner. A love for wine and the prestige of great terroirs inspired the businessman to invest in the Bordeaux region. Having led Lalique Group to success, he channelled his enthusiasm and his taste for excellence into the acquisition and development of vineyard estates.

Château Faugères

The winery designed by the architect Mario Botta, now an iconic part of the estate and the appellation, overlooks the rows of vines. Five centuries separate this facade with its geographic lines from the picturesque atmosphere of the Chartreuse de Faugères, built in the 16th century. As well as being a remarkable work of architecture, the winery is also a technological tool designed for cuttingedge winemaking.

On the vineyard side, this 37-hectare estate is located on a limestone plateau and a clay-limestone hillside that impose a high degree of requirement. At Faugères, close attention is paid to the development of the growth cycle allowing the grapes to achieve ideal levels of ripeness every year.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 harvest started with good news. Château Faugères is promoted as a Grand Cru Classé, and for all of its vineyard, now 42 hectares. Its mosaic of plots has allowed the vinification of wines which will quickly become memorable. Flavors and textures are found in exceptional concentrations in an ensemble of superb harmony.

As always, Château Faugères exudes its signature intensity and gorgeous fragrance, creating a surging field of energy. Its tannins are particularly strong, requiring 10-15 years of bottle aging to soften. Concentrated notes of black plum, black goji berry, and delicate herbal notes make for a rich and powerful taste. Given the weather conditions of the 2022 vintage, this wine’s texture is already excellent, but I still hope it will show more softness after aging. It should be noted that this wine has a cheese-like taste at the En Primeur stage, which a sensitive palate should be aware of.

High grilled sandalwood and clove oak imprint, balanced by orange peel, damson, graphite, with a fresh lift on the finish. Intense and concentrated, plenty of estate signature with a limestone fingerprint. 40ha vineyard, 36hl/h yield, 36% new oak for ageing, harvest September 5-27. Silvio Denz owner.

The 2022 Château Faugères offers both red and black fruit as well as notes of tobacco, spice, and flowers. Beautifully balanced, it has sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a round, lush mouthfeel. It’s a beautiful wine with depth and elegance, as well as 15+ years of overall longevity.

2027-2047 94/100

This is a rich wine, but there is a freshness and brightness with creamy tannins, crushed stones and Spanish cedar. Blueberries. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s exuberant and lively. 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Hard not to drink now but better in two or three years.

The 2022 Faugères is vibrant and layered in the glass. Dark cherry, graphite, menthol, new leather, licorice and a kiss of French oak all build with a bit of time. Pretty floral and spice notes lend notable freshness and verve throughout.

The 2022 Faugères was tasted twice, the second sample showing much more freshness on the nose with blackberry, wild strawberry and licorice aromas. The oak is nicely incorporated. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, lively with cedar and white pepper. It's fairly Left Bank in style on the structured finish. Good potential.

Velvet ruby in colour, intense and concentrated, as is on brand for this estate, with careful extraction keeping things in line. Clear reduction right now, but as it opens you get creamy fruit, edges of fresh mushroom, and a welcome bitter mint-chocolate finish. Vincent Cruège technical director, Silvio Denz owner. Harvest September 5 to 27. 36% new oak.

Mid crimson. Juicy, ripe but non-exaggerated fruit on the nose. Solid, concentrated fruit that lacks a little lift but ticks the boxes for a modern wine from this appellation without – just – too much obvious alcohol. Finish is a bit stringy and there’s a slight lack of juice.

The 2022 Faugeres is composed of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a touch closed and broody to start, soon revealing glimpses of baked plums, boysenberries, and tar notes with wafts of wild sage and damp soil. The full-bodied palate is lively and firmly textured, with plenty of savory fruit and a chewy finish.

The 2022 Château Faugères comes from the cooler eastern edge of Saint-Emilion, and it looks to be a beautiful wine in the vintage. Ripe black cherries, leather, dried herbs, and loamy earth all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a balanced, elegant mouthfeel and ripe, yet building tannins. It's going to shine with just a few years of bottle age.

The 2022 Faugeres is one of the most vibrant, nuanced wines I have tasted from from the property. Expressive floral and savory top notes meld into a core of racy red-toned fruit. Drinking window : 2027-2042

Black fruit, flowers, chocolate, plums, and mocha shine in the nose. The palate displays more of those lusciously-textured, black cherries, plums, and chocolate. The wine is rich, creamy, long and sweet, with vibrancy, energy, and a touch of savory herbs on the backend. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% ABV. Drink from 2024-2045.
