Faugères - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Silvio Denz Vineyards

The estate of Vignobles Silvio Denz in Saint-Emilion and in Sauternes share the passion that drives their owner. A love for wine and the prestige of great terroirs inspired the businessman to invest in the Bordeaux region. Having led Lalique Group to success, he channelled his enthusiasm and his taste for excellence into the acquisition and development of vineyard estates.

Château Faugères

The winery designed by the architect Mario Botta, now an iconic part of the estate and the appellation, overlooks the rows of vines. Five centuries separate this facade with its simple yet sculptural geographic lines from the picturesque atmosphere of the Chartreuse de Faugères, built in the 16th century as a hunting lodge and enjoying the same view. As well as being a remarkable work of architecture, the winery is also a technological tool designed for cuttingedge winemaking.

On the vineyard side, this 37-hectare estate is located on a limestone plateau and a clay-limestone hillside that impose a high degree of requirement. At Faugères, close attention is paid to the development of the growth cycle. The teams support and listen to the vines, allowing them to achieve ideal levels of ripeness every year.

The 2021 vintage

Château Faugères 2021 is a vintage with no shortage of finesse and elegance. The nose presents an explosion of fruit: blueberries, sloe, black cherries and floral notes.
On the palate, it is extremely rich and delectable, with delicate acidity. The tannins are elegant and smooth, coating your entire mouth. The finish is marked by freshness and balance.

A nice touch of fine reduction that protects the fruit and almost mingles with the oak spices, giving this a dusty feel with dulce de leche, blackberries, cassis and graphite. A crunchy, medium-bodied palate with fresh, juicy tannins and a firm, lively finish. Long, elegant and fluid. A very good expression from this lighter vintage. Drink from 2024.

Soft but fresh, with gentle violet and plum notes carried by a silky structure, ending with light tobacco and apple wood accents. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027. 6,050 cases made.  –JM

A very fine-textured wine with linear, racy tannins. Medium body and bright acidity. Mineral and chalk. Lovely, curranty flavor.

The 2021 Château Faugères comes a larger 37-hectare vineyard and 35-year-old vines. The blend is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, and it will spend 12 months in one-third new barrels. With great aromatics (black raspberries, cassis, violets), medium-bodied richness, silky, ultra-fine tannins, and outstanding balance, it's not a heavyweight and shines for its elegance and purity. It' certainly makes the most of the vintage and will easily end up being an outstanding wine.

Ce vin à la fois onctueux et ample possède des tannins bien présents. Il a déjà de la gourmandise.

Different from the Faugères in a hot year with its typical intensity, the 2021 vintage is as ethereal and elegant as the orchids growing in a serene valley. The aromas of sour plum juice, rhubarb jam, and dried cherry are pristine and pure. With a swirl of the glass, one will even find the mild fragrance of prickly rose. The satin-like tannins and solid structure integrate with each other seamlessly, with smooth acidity falling on your palate gently. ?Faugères????????????,2021???Faugères???“????”???????????????????????????,???????????????????????????????????,?????????????

Medium-bodied, soft, fresh and silky, with layers of sweet, juicy, dark plums, black cherries, mocha and espresso. Lush and refined, the wine finishes with espresso, dark cocoa and deep, ripe, sweet pit fruits with a sprig of mint in the endnote. The harvest took place September 29 - October 15. Drink from 2023-2037. 91-93

The 2021 Faugères offers vanilla-y red fruit and modest definition on the nose, which is quite fragrant but missing some complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine acidity. A less opulent Péby than of late and, frankly, all the better for it.

The 2021 Faugères offers a beguiling mix of inky dark fruit and brighter, saline nuances that lend vibrancy. Red/purplish berries, lavender, rose petal and sweet spice are all beautifully lifted. I have to say, I very much like the energy and overall tension here. A mix of floral and mineral accents punctuates the finish. Terrific.

Aromas of berries, plums, sweet spices and licorice, framed by creamy new oak, introduce the 2021 Faugères, a medium to full-bodied, rich and rather extracted wine that's nevertheless more seamless and polished than is sometimes the case in the banner vintages at this address.
