G d'Estournel - Médoc 2021

Cos d'Estournel, a palace entirely dedicated to wine

North of the Medoc, at the bend of the road are the majestic pagodas of Cos d’Estournel. The residence of the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe does not fail to surprise. Here is a real palace, entirely dedicated to wine. This had been desired by Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, the founder. Therefore when he inherited a few hectares of vineyards in 1791, he had never ceased to enlarge the estate and to provide it with the best techniques, convinced of having in his hands an exceptional terroir. Property since 2000 of Michel Reybier, Cos d’Estournel pursues its destiny, between audacity and humility. Every decision is a risktaken, in a visionary philosophy that its founder would not have disowned.

G d'Estournel, a radiant and voluptuous wine

Produced from vines planted in the North of the Médoc, Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is renamed "G d'Estournel" from 2019 vintage and on. The wine also benefits from a new packaging allowing it to be more strongly associated to the Cos d'Estournel universe.

G d'Estournel 2021 - Velvety

Delicate and pure, G d'Estournel 2021 reveals a touch of salinity occasioned by the Gironde's briny breezes and refined notes of rosemary, licorice, and sour cherry, resulting in a wine so nuanced and subtle that it is not without recalling an infusion.
A lively, velvety texture accompanies the wine's characteristic roundness, which is enhanced in the 2021 vintage by aromas of hazelnut, making for a truly delectable wine.

2021, humility and precision

"Unfailing in their choices and meticulous in their approach to the specificities of each plot, our teams met the contrasted weather events of the 2021 vintage with ceaseless vigilance and precision that allowed us to maintain our vineyard in perfect health and bring our precious grapes to ideal levels of maturity.Michel Reybier

From vines purchased in 2003 and a blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a splash of Cabernet Franc, the 2021 G D'Estournel sports a deep ruby color as well as a pretty, juicy, lively bouquet of ripe darker cherries, mulberries, damp earth, tobacco, and some violets. It's nicely textured and balanced, with fine tannins and a great finish.

Stylish, with a polished feel to the cassis and warm cherry notes, which are gently inlaid with a sweet tobacco accent. Reveals a late sanguine echo. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028. 6,500 cases made.  –JM

Goulée has become G, and this identity shift has resulted in a change in timbre and succulence in this wine. With considerable depth of fruit and more power than expected, this is an impressive wine, given its challenges this year. The finish is tart and clean, and the colour and density are superb. What more could you want? 17

Flowers, smoke, and red fruits are found in the nose and on the soft, supple, fresh, forward, already charming, fruity palate. This will drink well on release. Drink from 2023-2031. 88-90

The 2021 G d'Estournel, formerly Goulée, has quite an opulent bouquet of black cherries and light licorice scents, though not as complex as previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with bold and quite grippy tannins, moderate depth, touches of blueberry and black cherries, and hints of fresh fig toward the grippy, assertive finish. Give this 3–4 years in bottle.

The 2021 G 'Estournel is racy and expressive in the glass. Pretty floral and savory accents run through a core of dark Merlot fruit. This mid-weight, gracious Haut-Médoc is all charm. The 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. Delicious.

Leuchtendes Rubin.

Rose-touched sweet red berry fruit. Subtle and quite deep. This is more rich than overtly fresh and acidic. Unfussy, with concentrated blackcurrants and black cherries. Succulent, then crisp salinity coming through at the end, plus Cabernet markers of eucalyptus, mint and green peppercorns. Calm and gentle with rich, high-toned fruit. 25% new oak. Soft spicing from clove and cinnamon.
