The 2015 Arômes de Pavie, which is matured in 50% new oak, has a rich and quite heady bouquet for a deuxième vin, black cherries, crème de cassis and violet emerging from the glass although I would have liked more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, well-judged acidity, a little dryness toward the finish with coconut and mocha on the aftertaste. I would just dial down the oak and pick a bit earlier. Anticipated maturity: 2019 - 2026.

The 2015 Esprit de Pavie is a pleasant, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the red cherry and plum fruit is youthfully vibrant. Crushed flowers, mint, tobacco, cedar and spice add lovely aromatic nuance to this entry-level offering from Gerard Perse.

This vintage is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 15 months in one-year-old barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Esprit de Pavie (a blend of vines in Côtes do Castillon and young vines from Pavie and Monbousquet) opens with expressive red and black plums notes plus touches of baking spices, vanilla pod, dark chocolate and dried Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the bright fruit fills the mouth with plenty of spicy red and black fruits, supported by chewy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.

The 2015 Esprit de Pavie is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a clean and nicely poised bouquet with blackberry and bilberry fruit, lively with plenty of fruit. The palate is sweet and a little grainy on the entry, a touch of chalk infusing the blackberry and mulberry fruit, leading to a slightly abrupt but decent finish. This just needs a couple of years in bottle.

The 2015 Esprit de Pavie, Gerard Perse's entry-level offering, is a blend made from the family's holdings in Saint-Émilion and the Côtes de Castillon. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, plum and spice notes meld together in a bold, fruit-driven wine to drink over the next few years. The 2015 is especially plump and juicy. The integration of oak is not perfect at this stage, but hopefully that will sort itself out over the coming months. Esprit de Pavie is 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
