Epu - Puento Alto 2022

EPU, a perfect introduction to the exclusive and harmonious world of Almaviva

The 2022 Vintage: 

The 2021 winter in Puente Alto was extremely dry and initially warmer, with only 70 mm of rainfall, a 71% decrease from the average. The 2022 vintage had a warm spring but average summer temperatures, resulting in excellent Bordeaux varieties with a great balance of ripeness, freshness, structure, and acidity. 


Tasting notes:

Deep, opaque ruby red. The nose is intense, ripe, and complex, full of black fruits, with fine aromas of cassis, cherry, wild strawberries, fig and liquorice.  In the mouth, the attack is juicy and supple, the tannins are round and smooth. The wine leaves an overall impression of balance and voluptuous texture, with a long savoury finish. Well-balanced between freshness and ripeness, this generous wine expresses faithfully the terroir of Puente Alto in this extremely dry vintage.

Inspired by Bordeaux, the 2022 Epu is Almaviva’s second wine. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot sourced from Maipo Alto. This deep purple-red wine offers notes of cassis, menthol and a touch of cedar on the nose. Indulgent, with plush tannins and a rich palate, it leaves a slightly clingy texture. Full of flavor, this rich, concentrated wine is characteristic of the 2022 vintage.

EPU (Almaviva) 2022 (Maipo Valley; 84% Cabernet Sauvignon; 10% Carménère; 3% Merlot; 2% Cabernet Franc; 1% Petit Verdot; aged for 12 months in French oak, 10 % of which was new; 15.5% alcohol). The second wine of Almaviva. From an extremely dry vintage, warm in the spring but around the average in the summer with good variation between night and day time temperatures. Spicy, with prominent cinnamon, star anise and Chinese five spice notes, accompanying the fresh and more baked plum and black berry fruits. A touch of red cherry and a little fennel seed too. Extremely compact and concentrated, with quite a narrow frame and fine-grained but quite angular tannins that well-define the external parameters of the wine as it flows graciously over the palate. One notices the somewhat elevated alcohol only on the finish. 92.

The 2022 Epu leads with a poised yet charmingly rustic nose of ripe red fruits flanked by herbaceous, leathery accents. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, with an opulent, forward richness that transitions to a decedent, chocolate-tinged finish of rich tannins and a lingering herbal, menthol-laced conclusion. A well-made balance between style and place, this serves as a pleasurable and accessible introduction to the more poised, nuanced Almaviva. It's a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carménère, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged 12 months in 10% new French oak.

Refined sweet tobacco, black olives and hints of paprika, cedar, iron and anchovy-like savoriness. Refined sweet berries on the palate with a lovely savoriness. Medium-bodied and restrained, plush and generous, with fine tannins and a lengthy finish. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 10% carmenere, 3% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink or hold.
