Durfort Vivens (BIO-ORGANIC) - Margaux 2022

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a story of passion

Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton are among those people who are driven by their passion. They both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. These two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates in the early 90's: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux.

In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry.
Claire and Gonzague, faithful to their deepest values, always search new practices that are adopted to their soils and allow them to reveal the terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce fine wines that matter.

Château Durfort-Vivens, a pioneering estate that has become a benchmark.

Aroused by the challenge and the property’s potential, Gonzague Lurton asked to inherit Château Durfort-Vivens in 1992. He was driven by the ambition of restoring its rank of Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé). He sets himself the further challenge of doing things differently from other Bordeaux châteaux in the 1990s, even if it meant going against what the other renowned estates used to do.  In 2009, he began the conversion to biodynamic viticulture. He was convinced that this approach would allow him to rediscover the potential of the terroir that he had always sought. Over the years, the quality of the wines of Château Durfort-Vivens has gained in brilliance and precision.

The 62-hectare vineyard of Durfort-Vivens is located in the Margaux appellation. It was the only Grand Cru classé in 1855 to be both certified organic and biodynamic at the same time. To consolidate the status acquired in 1855, Gonzague and Claire are constantly questioning themselves. This has led to the use of amphorae in the ageing process, so much so that today the Durfort Vivens winery has the largest volume of amphorae in the world.

The 2022 vintage

"This vintage surprised us and the analysis we can make now is that strong, gradual water stress and exceptionally hot weather are not limiting the balance and the subtle expression of our terroirs but quite the contrary. Perhaps for the first time, we have two vintages in one. The power, density and length of a great vintage and the brilliance, elegance and energy of a great classic vintage. This wine, which many consider to be the greatest wine made on the estate in living memory, is the finest tribute I could have paid to my father Lucien Lurton, who passed away on March 25th at the age of 97. He bought Durfort-Vivens in 1961, at a very complicated time. It was his first purchase and he always had a special affection for it." Gonzague Lurton

In the sweltering conditions of 2022, Gonzague remained undaunted, boldly pressing forward to produce a wine of pure and intense aromas. He was not afraid to conduct a “double harvest”: first picking the partially dried grapes, then beginning the regular harvest two weeks later. With a gentle swirl of the glass, cherry berries and wild roses gracefully reveal themselves, while the lingering finish unveils the rich fragrance of longan. The tannin structure is as delicate as silk, and the Cabernet Sauvignon body is steadfast as a jade. akin to the Titanic gliding gracefully across the ocean – grand and serene. The 2022 Durfort Vivens offers up aromas of sweet crème de cassis, violets, boot polish, creamy new oak and hints of saddle leather and cigar ash. Medium to full-bodied, layered and creamy, with a rich core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and a long, lactic finish, it has turned out nicely but isn't quite as precise as the exceptional 2019 and 2020 duo.

Inky, plenty of depth, a gorgeous Durfort Vivens, full of tension and personality, waves of peonies, roses, cassis, rises through the marked by black spices, dark cocoa bean and slate, graphite and crayon. 70% new oak, 30% amphoras, Gonzague Lurton owner

2026-2037 96/100

The 2022 Durfort-Vivens is a heady, explosive wine. Ample and creamy, the 2022 is seriously impressive. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, a bit more Merlot than normal. That seems to have filled out the mid-palate, adding a level of juiciness that is quite complementary to the wine's underlying structure. Inky dark fruit, new leather, menthol, licorice and lavender build into a finish that is both opulent and virile. Ageing was 16 months, 70% in new oak and 30% in amphora.

Lovely freshness and aromatic complexity on the nose; herbs, spices, flowers, bitterness, freshness. Juicy and alive, a brightness and liveliness straight away. The energy here is wonderful, so lean and clean, pure and precise, very pretty, fun and joyful with a salty tang underneath. Delicate almost with such well integrated tannins giving a soft push from start to finish. Really very compelling and drinkable, easy to approach with layers of freshness and the most gorgeous acidity. Not as dense or fleshy as others, but makes up for it in bite, energy and enjoyable minerality. Effortless winemaking. 3.65pH. 12% press. 85-90 IPT, but you wouldn’t tell, it’s so sleek, the power is channelled in a straight line from start to finish. Ageing: 18 months, 70% in new oak barrels and 30% in amphorae TAVA.

The 2022 Château Durfort-Vivens showed brilliantly and is a seriously good wine in the making. Vinified at Brane-Cantenac and aging in 60% new oak, with 40% in amphora, it has a pure, focused, medium to full-bodied style as well as both red and black fruits, some violet and floral nuances, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. This is one of those wines that builds with time in the glass, and it should clearly be outstanding, if not truly exceptional.

The 2022 Durfort-Vivens is a wild, exotic wine that very much shows the natural opulence of the year. Super-ripe dark red/purplish fruit, pomegranate and sweet spice are front and center. There’s a bit more Merlot in this year’s blend, and that seems to come through in the wine’s overall fruit intensity. The final blend is project to be 70% new oak and 30% amphora, but the sample I tasted was only taken from oak components, as the wine had only been racked into amphora shortly prior to this tasting. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, the 2022 Durfort Vivens is a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of minty dark berries, sweet plums, licorice and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's rich and concentrated, with a deep and lively core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins.

Deep crimson hue. Creamy and expressive with crème de cassis notes. Plenty of lift and freshness, the fruit juicy and tannins fine. Firmly structured all the same. Pinpoint for the vintage. (JL)
