Duhart-Milon - Pauillac 2023

Duhart-Milon: a unique terroir and history in the heart of Pauillac

Château Duhart-Milon, an 1855 Grand Cru Classé located next to Château Lafite Rothschild, became part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite collection in 1962. The story goes that ‘Sieur Duhart’, a privateer under Louis XV, settled in Pauillac when he retired. The Duhart-Milon wine label was inspired by his house on the port of Pauillac.

The vines of Château Duhart-Milon are located to the north of the Pauillac appellation, next to an area of over 100 hectares of marshes, meadows and woods, a rare situation in the Médoc. The vineyard covers 76 hectares and is situated on the west side of Château Lafite Rothschild, adjacent to the Milon hillside, which forms an extension of the Carruades de Lafite plateau.

The 2023 vintage

From the initial berry tastings, Duhart has stood out for its resilience against the challenges of 2023, particularly toward the end of the season, withstanding two consecutive heatwaves in late August and early September. This resilience clearly demonstrates that the vineyard has reached a mature stage, and that the replanting initiatives begun in 2016 on the finest plots are now yielding fruitful results. Grapes from these younger parcels are already contributing to the grand vin. This year, the wine boasts an exceptional density and richness, exceeding all initial expectations and enchanting with its distinctive charm and personality.

The 2023 Duhart-Milon was impressive from barrel and now in bottle, it has retained generosity on the nose with black plum, mint, cedar and touches of blueberry and blossom in the glass while retaining wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, wonderful poise, far removed from the austere Duharts of old. (Eric Kohler attributes this to the new cellar with improved vin de presse. There is also concurrent replanting of some of the older parcels.) Excellent.

Good depth, with a fresh herbal touch to the black currants and a hint of graphite, cocoa powder and spices. Layered and integrated, with fine, chiseled tannins, a fleshy core of fruit and a long, ample finish. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Drinkable now but better from 2027.

The 2023 Château Duhart-Milon is much more Cabernet-dominated and has cassis, graphite, and sappy, floral, and lead pencil notes as well as medium-bodied richness. It's pure and has terrific overall balance, a notable sense of freshness (pH is 3.8), and building tannins.

Duhart-Milon (Pauillac; 80% Cabernet Sauvignon; 20% Merlot; a final yield of 45hl/ha yield; around 65% of the production made the selection for the grand vin; 15% press wine; 13.1% alcohol). Rather closed aromatically when tasted under light grey skies with rain in the air at the property. Cedar, fruits of the forest, cassis. A big, plump and quite spherical mouthful of sapid, juicy, fresh berry fruits. This feels cool, autumnal, almost slightly austere in a way, with a hint of wild herbs and heather – wild, almost sauvage. Not terribly dense or, indeed, compact, but crystalline, clear, translucent and quite pixilated by the tannins, whose glossiness and finesse brings polish. The acidity picks up on the finish, which helps give it lift. If I have a quibble it is that, like Moulin de Duhart, this feels just a little herbaceous on the finish. The frame is almost too ample to sustain the fruit intensity.

Black currant, plums, chocolate, cigar box, and flowers fill the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh, forward, soft, and creamy, the spicy, black with red currants with their sweet, and savory character are going to offer pleasure shortly after release. Yet, this should age for up 2 decades as well. The wine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. 13.1% ABV, 3.8 pH.15% Press wine. Drink from 2028-2050. 93-95 Pts.

Inky plum, far deeper in texture and intensity than the Moulin de Duhart (in contrast to 2022, when both 1st and 2nd wines were intensely coloured). Classical Duhart on the attack, reserved and a little subdued, then in comes the waves of cassis, liqourice root, spiced plum, ink, tobacco and cigar box. High Cabernet in the blend, and it suits the style and character of Duhart. Has a ton of ageing potential, classical styled with precision, fully showcasing the enjoyment of 2023 in the right spots. Around 65% first wine, 45hl/h yield, 15% of press wine. Harvest September 7 to October 3. A buy.

The 2023 Duhart-Milon is seriously impressive. Dark, virile and brooding in its intensity, the 2023 screams with Cabernet Sauvignon character. Plum, blackberry, incense, leather, grilled herbs and licorice lend notable textural resonance and pure power. There's a good bit of tannin, so patience is a must. A virile, authoritative wine, Duhart-Milon is hugely promising in this edition. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.

The 2023 Duhart-Milon was picked September 7 to October 3 and contains 15% pressed wine, matured in 50% new oak. It has a much more backward bouquet than the Moulin, displaying well-defined yet tightly coiled graphite-infused black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins that belie the backbone of this Pauillac. That graphite element is accentuated in the mouth and controls the classic finish that could only come from this appellation. This is excellent, but patience is required.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Ripe plum, sweet cherry, inviting bouquet. Juicy, fruity and round, delicate tannins, sweet fruit on the finish, mineral, accessible, offers uncomplicated drinking pleasure.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Duhart-Milon pops from the glass with notes of wild blueberries, black cherries, and fresh mulberries giving way to underlying hints of cardamom, licorice, and charcoal. The medium-bodied palate is chock full of bright, black fruits with fine-grained tannins and lovely, well-knit freshness, finishing with a real skip in its step. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, with an alcohol of 13.1%. "We've been restructuring the vineyard for the past 8 years, with a little bit more Cabernet Sauvignon, although we also have good terroir for Merlot," says Saskia de Rothschild. "The planting density is lower - down to 7,000 vines per hectare."

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon (picked late, between September 25 and October 3) and 20% Merlot, the 2023 Duhart-Milon has turned out beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, cherries and dark berries mingled with hints of mint, cedar and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with an ample core of cool but ripe fruit, sweet tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

So much pure graphite and lead pencil here, together with blackcurrant and iodine aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with creamy and velvety tannins that are very polished. Cedar and some tobacco box. Deep and layered. Al-dente tannins. Precise.
