Dragon de Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016

Château Quintus, a new icon on the Right Bank

Domaine Clarence Dillon purchased a superb Saint-Emilion estate in 2011, then a neighbouring property in 2013 and a third in 2021. These three exceptional vineyards now form a 45-hectare estate that produces one of Saint-Emilion's Grand Vin wines. The Gallo-Romans who planted the vineyards of Saint-Emilion used to name their fifth child Quintus (fifth). Domaine Clarence Dillon has therefore decided to pay tribute to its glorious ancestors by renaming the vineyard Château Quintus.

Le Dragon de Quintus is the second wine of the estate. The name originates from the dragon statue that towers above the magical terroir of Saint-Emilion, perched high upon the promontory, where the estate is located.

The 2016 Dragon de Quintus has a fleshy, dried-blood-tinged bouquet that comes across more savory than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, but rather rustic at the moment, and it attenuates slightly toward the finish. More substance is required. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Richly black-fruited. The fruit, for once, dominates the tannin. Pretty massive and burly but should not disappoint. Quite long. Drink 2024-2040

This follows the pattern of the grand vin; there is freshness and finesse but it's a little rounder and more forthcoming. Suave and firm, there's quite a tannic frame here. The finish is just a little less polished.

Darker cherry and earthier notes emerge from the 2016 Le Dragon de Quintus, a medium-bodied, ripe, impressive second wine that has good sweetness of fruit as well as purity. It plays in the more elegant style of the vintage and is perfect for drinking over the coming decade.

This has a rich and warm expression of plum sauce and blackberry preserve flavors, laced with subtle black tea and singed incense notes. The fresh acidity lets the finish hang nicely. Accessible now. Drink now through 2028. 3,400 cases made.  –JM

A delicious and fresh St.-Emilion with ripe blackberries and a subtle, mineral note that shows clearly on the long, crisp and juicy finish. Second wine of Château Quintus. Already friendly, but better from 2020.

The 2016 Le Dragon de Quintus has a perfumed, floral bouquet of red fruit infused with pressed rose petals; kirsch and orange blossom emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. A little pinched on the entry, and quite peppery, with gentle grip toward the tinny finish. Give this a couple of years to shave off those edges.

The 2016 Le Dragon de Quintus is dark, pliant and supple. Dark cherry, mocha, espresso and spice notes all flesh out in this succulent, racy second wine from Quintus. Élevage has given the 2016 soft contours and also a bit more oak influence than the wi showed en primeur. I would give the 2016 a few years in bottle to shed some of its baby fat. The 2016 spent 12 months in 29% new oak. I would prefer to drink the 2016 over the next few years, while the wine remains supple.

Blended of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 le Dragon de Quintus leaps from the glass with bold blackberry preserves, stewed plums and wild blueberry scents plus suggestions of new leather, menthol and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black and blue fruit preserves with a velvety frame and lovely spicy sparks on the finish.

Tout en tendreté florale, ce second vin séduit par sa souplesse et son fruit déjà bien dégagé

The 2016 Le Dragon de Quintus is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 3 and 20 October. I found that aromatics tightly wound and a little unresponsive when I tasted it at Haut-Brion, though I managed to coax blackcurrant and bilberry scents, a touch of pressed flowers with time. I would like to see more vigor once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin: blackberry mingling with white pepper and cloves, nicely balanced with commendable presence on the grainy finish. Hopefully the aromatics will wake up with time in barrel and perhaps 12-18 months in bottle.

The 2016 Le Dragon de Quintus is a gorgeous second wine with the potential to develop into one of the sleepers of the vintage. The flavors are remarkably pure and precise; dark red cherry, raspberry, flowers and sweet spice give the Dragon unusual depth. A closing burst of floral and spice-infused freshness and lift makes it impossible to resist a second taste. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this exemplary Saint-Émilion.

(90 Merlot, 10 Cabernet Franc) | 29% new oak | 14.9% alc. | 63 IPT | Harvested between 3-20 October The nose is fully open and ripe, marked with oak, but firm and strident. There is no fleshiness or juiciness here, just total focus and momentum. The tannins are sweet and gourmand and rather than dry and hard and this gives the impression of a forward wine, but this is not entirely true. This is a rather forceful second wine and perhaps it is a little too introverted for its role in the company, but it is certainly shocking. 17+

Barrel Sample. Dominated by Merlot, this is a richly perfumed, ripe and spicy wine. Soft tannins are balanced by plenty of acidity and blackberry fruit. It's full in structure, but still allows plenty of room for the fruit.

A salty and minerally red with plums, leaves and tobacco and lots of blackberries. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a crisp finish. Second wine of Quintus.
