Dominique (la) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

The estate

Located northwest of Saint-Emilion, on the edge of the Pomerol appellation
Pomerol, Château La Dominique has been cultivating its distinction for
for many years.

Château La Dominique is a wine estate since the 16th century, ideally located, directly adjacent to Châteaux Cheval Blanc, Figeac, l'Evangile and La Conseillante. This 25ha vineyard belongs to Clément Fayat since 1969. Today, the estate judiciously combines authenticity and modernity, notably with its avant-garde cellar signed by Jean Nouvel and its restaurant "La Terrasse Rouge".

Tasting notes

Adorned with its brilliant deep red color, Château La Dominique combines the generosity of Saint-Emilion with the sap of Pomerol, the appellation
bordering the estate.
Characterized by aromas of ripe fruit, exalted by subtle notes of spices, the wine also seduces with its notes of truffle, licorice, pepper or undergrowth.
Its frank attack begins a round and fleshy mouth, revealing silky and precise tannins. The long and ample finish leaves a pleasant sensation of
of fullness ".

The 2021 La Dominique is a pretty wine for this estate. Gracious and medium in body, the 2021 offers plenty of near-to-medium-term appeal. Crushed red berry fruit, flowers, cinnamon, orange peel and white pepper are nicely lifted. All this is missing is a bit of mid-palate pliancy.

The 2021 La Dominique opens in the glass with notes of minty berries, plums and cherries, framed by a discreet touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, suave and polished, with an attractive core of cool, layered fruit, it's framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish. While it will show well out of the gates, this will also reward at least a modicum of bottle age. 92+

Dark plums, cherries, grilled citrus and a touch of dark earth decadence and mushrooms on the nose. Subtle dark spices, too. Medium to full body on the palate with dusty tannins and a lengthy, intricate finish. Refined and layered. Already complex. Drink or hold.

Soft in feel, with modest damson plum and cherry fruit lined with a whiff of chalk. Ends with a potpourri echo. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2025. 10,000 cases made.  –JM

Seemingly lacking in fleshiness, this is a shade or two under-ripe, and yet the fruit is quite powerful and blacker than many. While this is not a texturally impressive wine, there is a decent engine of fruit here, and it falls a little short on charm, but it will undoubtedly age well and hold for a good many years. 16.5+

Blackberry, walnut and crushed-stone aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate with medium, round tannins and a juicy, pretty finish. Polished and fine for the vintage.

Lots of red and black fruits, dried herbs, graphite, and a kiss of minerality emerge from the 2021 Château La Dominique, a downright pretty, elegant Saint-Emilion that comes from vines on the upper plateau, not far from the Pomerol border. Beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, and elegant on the palate, with quality tannins, it has lots of character and is going to drink brilliantly for 15+ years. This is an estate readers should have on their radar as the quality here continues to rise. Tasted twice.

Belle réussite avec une sensation affirmée de plénitude, un vrai cœur de bouche, un tannin élégant, soyeux et un rayonnement final respectant tous les équilibres. Un des meilleurs crus du secteur.

La Dominique 2021 displays very delicate and refined aromas. Fresh raspberry, sour date, and red cherry notes are prominent, with hints of clove and spicy licorice dancing around. I particularly enjoy the milky texture accompanied by fresh acidity, a combination serves like a smooth, springy Panna Cotta. The tannins are especially dense and soft, spreading on the palate like edelweiss dancing with the wind. A wonderful Saint-émilion. Love it. Flowers and red fruits show nicely in the perfume. On the palate, the medium-bodied wine is soft, elegant, polished, silky and sweet, with accents of espresso, peppery spice, herbs and cocoa in the dusty, earthy, and refined endnote. The wine blends 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% ABV. The wine is aged in 50% new, French oak, and 10% amphora. You can enjoy this on release. Drink from 2023-2038. 91-93

The 2021 La Dominique presents a focused nose of perfumed blackberry, raspberry, cedar and sous-bois scents with well-integrated oak. The well-balanced palate is fresh and crisp with fine-grained tannins. Silky-smooth leading into a very persistent, tensile finish. This continues La Dominique's upward trajectory. Excellent.

Dichtes Rubin.

Aromas of sweet cherries, berries, petals and loamy soil introduce the 2021 La Dominique, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless wine that's attractively deep and complete, with ripe tannins, lively acids and a long, sapid finish. It's a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon from this estate in the ascendant.
